Secure Core makes everything faster

Hello, I have been using ProtonVPN for some time now and it has been working quite well. However, recently when I select the “fastest” option, my entire computer seems to become very slow. YouTube videos take a long time to start, and websites load extremely slowly. I have tried different countries and servers, but the issue persists.

It is not my internet connection that is slow, as I usually receive around 750 Mbps even with the VPN activated.

When I enabled “secure core,” the problem was resolved. Everything became very fast and loaded instantly.

However, this seems unusual because “secure core” is supposed to be the slower but more secure option. I am curious as to why it is making everything so much faster.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or have any insights into what might be causing this?

Actually never heard of this, quite the opposite. Maybe reinstall and try again?

Could depend on the protocol and servers/countries tried…

Have you tried not using the fastest option? I typically choose my own servers with like 10 minutes of testing time and if I liked it I save it

If possible, try the WireGuard protocol as it’s much faster than the OpenVPN protocol.

You could try this:

  1. Disconnect vpn

  2. Delete your vpn profile

  3. Make a new one by connecting to your vpn again

If it still doesn’t work try the exact same steps but after you reconnect go into the kill switch and turn both tabs on(always on vpn & block connections without vpn)

That’s because the ping. 750mbs 70 ping is slower than 300mbs 13 ping:

Proton calculates the ‘fastest’ in some mysterious way, I never get speed in fastest handle.

Please try Open VPN TCP protocol, and let us know.

Also have you tried Proton on another device on the same network?

Also if you do and share a detailed speed test, it might give a good idea of what is happening.

I did some teste by downloading steam games:

  • Fastest, secure core off: max 35mbps

  • Secure core on 400mbps

  • Open VPN TCP , secure core off: 155mbps

  • Open VPN TCP , secure core on: 320mbps

Cloudflare speed test:

  • Open VPN TCP , secure core on: 330Mbps download and 70 Latency

  • Open VPN TCP , secure core off: 135Mbps download and 123 Latency

  • VPN off: 870Mbps download and 12 Latency

I have not tried another device yet.
