I’m looking for recommendations for a VPN with a monthly subscription that has a client that works well with Void. I’ve tried several, including Nord and Proton, but I can’t get the client software working on Void. With Proton I managed to set it up manually with openconnect but it’s a hassle to set up new connections. Does anyone have any recommendations to share?
I used to use Nord with Void, but ended up moving to running Wireguard natively on my laptop and phone connecting to a wireguard peer running on one of my public VPN servers.
Another option is running wg on a capable home router (like a Mikrotik). I do this as well.
I’m using Private Internet Access - PIA - https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/
If I recall correctly (it was some time ago) I simply downloaded the ‘Makeself’ file and ran it. It created /opt/piavpn and I made a symbolic link to access it /usr/local/bin/piactl → /opt/piavpn/bin/piactl etc.
wireguard and openvpn are supported.
The GUI client works perfectly - although, being me, I run everything with a simple script or with a button on waybar - dump — Postimages
I used to use nord - and boy! - they spammed me with emails. I still get them. I haven’t had a single spam email from PIA since installing and their prices are very reasonable. With nord, you have to play hard-to-get especially around renewal time - let the account lapse and then you get a decent price.
That said, my VPN usage is very simple eg I haven’t tried region-jumping with Netflix or BBC player or other service but I have no reason to believe it would not work. Maybe try their free 30-day trial.
It is possible to use protonvnp-cli without openconnect (however not with 2FA on unfortunately: https://github.com/ProtonVPN/linux-cli/issues/68 ).
I’ve had success with Cyberghost on other distros - it can even be set up inside some routers for an always on effect (and you only assign it to certain clients on your network, pretty slick).
Why through OpenVPN? Mullvad’s wireguard connection works on Void through manual setup and official mullvad app
