PSA For Players Using Mudfish VPN Service: Regular Browsing & Downloading Will Eat All Your Credits

I ran into this issue today, suddenly all my mudfish credits were just gone. In the past, $3 worth of credits, 24 GB-worth of traffic, has lasted me 2 years before needing to refill when used just for XIV playtime.

My latest refill lasted 2 months instead. Digging into how this happened I found a couple pages in their wiki that described a new problem they apparently have now (and a potential proxy setup workaround for it).

If you use Mudfish to play games like

Some popular games are running on Amazone EC2 cloud to publish their games. So in Mudfish’s view, it’s almost impossible to distinguish whether this traffic goes to Twitch or the game server running on Amazon EC2 because Mudfish is implemented based on the routing table of OS. Due to this reason, sometimes Mudfish credits could be consumed if you tried to watch Twitch while Mudfish is running

or

A reason why mudfish items include host (domain based) information is that it’s to bypass the regional restriction policy of the game server. As you might know, most of game publishers use or depend on CDN’s (Content Delivery Network) to serve their download or patch files or streaming to the end users, sometimes it’s mandatory to access the game server because the game publisher doesn’t want to let users access their content if they’re from other countries that aren’t allowed. So if there’s a blocking policy based on GetIP at the CDN level, Mudfish users cannot access the game without bypassing CDN. The problem is that in some cases, connections to CDN’s could be redirected by Mudfish.
Due to the above reason, sometimes mudfish credits could be consumed if you tried to download or do streaming while Mudfish is running. And unfortunately, even normal HTTP requests (no relation to the game in question) could also go through Mudfish nodes because the DNS server of CDN company responses with the same IP of cache servers.

tl;dr, don’t have Mudfish running if you plan to do anything that isn’t just play the game you use it for. Make sure to turn it off before doing anything else.

Or you can try their proxifier solution

It also spams DNS requests for Nexon while you have the profile enabled. I emailed support asking about this feature but never heard back. Not sure what exactly it is doing, if it is some type of status check or if it is piggybacking other users requests for nexon off your connection.
Nexon traffic

Curious as to if this is determined by Fast Connect or not, because I use that and never had a problem like this; the only things that use data when the VPN is open is the game itself and patching (which I turn it off for). I leave it open constantly; it gets opened once when I start up my PC and never turned off until the next startup and has no bearing on my data usage.

I was wondering why my topups have been lasting less than a month.

To add insult to injury it seems like no matter what route I’ve been picking lately it just likes to regularly disconnect me. I’ve been playing without it but the extra ping is quite annoying.

Longtime sufferer of this problem.

Mudfish always triggers my Netflix proxy detection so I can’t run both at the same time. The one time it didn’t, it ate up all my credits. Oddly I seem to be one of the only ones where Netflix gets caught because I think there’d be a lot more complaints.

That said, it’s basically lost its usefulness for me. I fire it up only when raiding and suffer without it 99% of the time.

I wish I had an alternative in the same price range.

Reddit learns to not patch/download a game using a vpn!

Yeah. Realized this after downloading a patch, then noticing half my credits were gone.

Odd question, but why are so many people using VPNs to play XIV?

I haven’t ran into an issue when streaming while playing FFXIV - but I ran into it when uploading clips to Streamable.com

thanks for the heads up…i had no idea. i rarely use mudfish when i’m not on my jp server alt so I may not even have noticed it if I’m opening up my browser to upload a picture or something.

Does is affect Youtube or any other streaming website? I don’t mind about the other stuff because when I update, I don’t have MF on. I don’t dl either. But yeah, I do listen music or watch stuff while playing.

Edit: TBH I haven’t noticed any issue with credits considering I use Youtube a lot while MFing.

This happened to me, I lost all my credits one day, I contacted Mudfish support, and they explained me the same things that OP described, and they were nice enough to give me back half of my lost credits while it wasn’t even something I asked them to, they just did it spontaneously. Cool people.

my 60 gb worth of data just disappear as well they say they will be doing a refund for me as in refund the credit to my account

Yea I noticed that when I was doing research on Mudfish before trying it out. I went back to Pingzapper after a month or so since I didn’t want to deal with that, plus Mudfish wasn’t making any difference in-game compared to PZ for me.

Or, you can just turn it off when you’re done playing.

Where do you need to use a vpn to play ffxiv

Are you playing on the Korean client?

What do you mean by “while you have profile enabled?”

Can you actually make Fast Connect work? I play on Aether from Europe and don’t notice any difference when turning it on, might even be a bit worse actually.

Yah, I’ve never had this problem either. I put like $5 in two years ago and use it almost constantly with FFXIV. Still have like 14gb of data left.
