I know this might be a bit biased since I’m asking in the ProtonVPN subreddit, but r/VPN doesn’t allow posts mentioning the word “Proton.” Is the free tier safe to use? Every article I’ve read warns that “free VPN” is a major red flag. Unfortunately, I can’t afford the premium version right now, though I hope to in the future. I’d like to use it alongside NextDNS.
Free without any clear business plan means they are selling your data (well, there’s no guarantee that paid provider doesn’t, but at least they have something to lose). The provider you mentioned do have paid plans, so it’s fine-ish assuming you need the different locations and accept limited speed.
If you don’t need to switch location, Cloudflare WARP is free and much faster. If you only need few short sessions each month, Windscribe free tier is enough, and its build-a-plan tier is much cheaper without long term commitment. If you’re comfortable with Linux CLI and don’t need multiple locations, self-host PiVPN on Oracle Cloud free tier.
I’ve been using the free tier of ProtonVPN, and I’d say it’s one of the few safe free VPNs out there. Unlike most free VPNs, Proton doesn’t log your data or bombard you with ads. It’s a solid choice if you’re prioritizing privacy but can’t afford the premium version yet.
The free tier is definitely safe compared to other free VPNs. ProtonVPN is known for its no-logs policy and strong encryption. While the speeds might not be the fastest, it’s reliable for basic browsing and works well with NextDNS for added security.
ProtonVPN’s free version has worked great for me. While it doesn’t offer all the features of the paid plan, it provides strong security and privacy. Pairing it with NextDNS is a great idea for an extra layer of protection.
I’ve read a lot about ProtonVPN, and it seems like one of the safest free VPNs available. It’s built around user privacy, and the company is transparent about its practices. If you’re combining it with NextDNS, you’re definitely making a good choice for secure browsing.
