NordVPN slowing down my internet

So, is this normal for NordVPN to make your internet connection slower? I already don’t have the world’s fastest intenet (only 36 Mbps) but with NordVPN turned on, this only gives me 29Mbps!

NordVPN on their website states that their service ensures a “fast” internet connection, but this is clearly not the case and it makes loading web pages and working from home remotely, a painful experience.

I’ve only had NordVPN for about a week and I believe there is a 30-day cooldown period in which I can cancel, but ironically, the NordVPN account management page won’t load so I can cancel this cumbersome affair!

It’s the nature of Vpn’s. They will slow your speed.

All VPNs will slow your speeds, you’re tunnelling your connection through another server after all. Nord is fast relative to the competition, but they can’t eliminate the overhead entirely.

I have 500 Mbps straight to ISP, btwn Nord and my firewall I get about 250-350Mbps, just how it goes. Small price for added security/privacy

Yes, it is to be expected. The 20% reduction you are seeing is not bad. I see around 50% with Nord on. Make sure that you are using the NordLynx protocol. Settings > Connections > VPN Protocol = NordLynx. When I switched to NordLynx, my Nord speeds almost quadrupled. Now, I get ~500 Mbps down and ~400 Mpbs up with Nord on vs ~950 Mbps down and ~850 Mbps up with Nord off on a gigabit plan.

Small price when you have fast internet like that, sure! But in my case, I literally have to sit and wait for a webpage to draw…And for work, this is completely unusable.

I want to cancel my sub with NordVPN, but their goddamn account page won’t load!

That is a very fair point and I hope I didn’t offend you or anything, how is your network hardware set up? Is it just ISP > ISP provided modem/router > your device + VPN?

Yep, that is how it’s set up. Don’t know if there is anything I can do to improve it?

I would give this a try:

NordVPN should be set to use nordlynx and DNS settings should be default (or disabled depending on your operating system)

If you can, go into your router’s settings and change the DNS servers to

Primary: 103.86.96.100

Secondary: 103.86.99.100

See if that helps, which I think should squeeze a little more out of what you have available. If there is no change, you can try setting the router’s DNS to Cloudflare’s public servers: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

Assigning the DNS in the router to Cloudflare may cause a DNS leak which, if it improves your speed as desired, I would verify there is no leak by using a web based “DNS leak test”

Thank you very much, I will try this and see if it helps.

For sure, let us know what you find
