Hi, I’m an investment service rep in Canada and currently working at home. I was thinking of moving to Europe for a couple of months, but I am scared my employer/IT can track that I’m not in Canada. My work is using pulse secure vpn, any one know how to trick the system into thinking I’m still in Canada? My original plan was to download a vpn on a usb then use it on my work computer, but I’m not too sure if that will work. Please advise
Just have fun, life is short, travel, work remotely.
Set up a VPN server (router) in Canada and buy a travel router with VPN client capabilities. Stay away from commercial vpn services. Check out GL.iNet products.
If you work for financial services and you get caught you will absolutely get fired. I only know from the context of the US but I imagine Canadian financial regulations are similar.
Even if you can trick your company by using a vpn or other technical measures, you can get sick in Europe, be injured, etc.
Also, your company has the right to ask you to come to the office even if you are a remote worker.
Don’t forget that time zone in Europe is +7 hours (less or more depending on the country of residence).
So, is your trip to Europe worth losing your job? If you don’t care about the job, then you can take a risk. Otherwise, I think it’s silly to violate the company’s rules.
is your plan in europe worth the risk?
There are a few ways to do this, and while some aren’t wildly difficult, they can add some extra steps, and it’s certainly seem possible you might one day screw up and connect directly.
Have you confirmed what your company’s policies are on working outside of the country? I work for a high security fintech company, and while certain countries are off limits, most are not. I know some companies can be much more strict about this though.
Install for example WireGuard on hardware at your house, get a cheap vpn router to connect to said hardware. I use Unraid on my home NAS and have WireGuard installed. I then have WireGuard on my phone, laptop etc as clients.
Are you required to stay and work in Canada as terms of your employment?
Here is a good place to start learning about what you will need
Just thought of a pretty slick way to do it:
- Setup any dumb PC/Laptop anywhere an Canada.
- Login to the dumb PC using TeamViewer, abydesk…etc remotely.
- Access pulse secure from there:)
I read through that link you sent and my question is if I am using my personal laptop with my own VPN to work from and not my work computer is there still a chance of being tracked?
