N2 as simple web browser for videos / streaming + VPN

Looking to use my N2 just to stream sports from websites with a VPN on in the background. Is the little machine competent for that? And what ROM would you flash to go about this? And then which software?

Thanks

Here are a few good blog posts that may be of help from ameriDroid’s website:

This one talks about the HC4, but also applies to the N2+:

What operating system do you want to use? Under Linux the drivers are better than they used to be but I still have some issues trying to play videos really smoothly because of the drivers. Maybe ok with software decoding up to 1080p but pushes the cpu. It would be fine for most web browsing and vpn stuff.

I hear that android may be a smoother experience for video, but haven’t tried it.

The stock Linux installs from hardkernel are pretty stable but don’t have video and 3d acceleration working and it’s software rendered. I used tobetters network install which is explained from the forum. Ubuntu 20.04 plus installing the bifrost drivers made the 3d Desktop rendering pretty smooth under wayland Ubuntu desktop, but I had some soft crashing when playing some videos with that driver in the media player or it didn’t seem to play smoothly in the browser. I tried the panfrost driver about 4 months ago and it seemed to do better at video, but the 3d wasn’t as smooth.

Most of the problems with hardware video acceleration in Linux revolve around the chipset vendor and what information or drivers they would release. I think they were more focused on the experience as an Android set top box device.

Generally find KODI is not good for sports content unless you have IPTV. Just want a simple browser that will play video streams from webpages and a VPN in the background. Have been reading about lack of hardware acceleration etc, just wanting to know what would be the most effective way to do this on a N2.

You could use the ubuntu or armbian desktop image
