More online protection with the new VPN by Google One
This actually looks cool, but I have no use for 2TB of Drive storage, I’m currently on the 100gb tier and I’ve only filled about 20gb
Has anyone here read their white paper? It mentions that they can’t identify you after you connect, they’ve open sourced the client, and “in the coming months we will be open sourcing the server side user
authentication mechanism as well as providing the results of a third party audit, currently
underway.”
If you’re paranoid, you’re probably not going trust anything that Google says anyway, but from what I can tell Google seems pretty serious about the privacy of this VPN.
This is more trick than treat.
Doesn’t Google Fi already have a VPN?
As if we weren’t being tracked by Google enough…
Route all my internet traffic through a Google server? No thanks
You guys literally don’t understand how VPNs work. This is to protect your data from MITM attacks on unencrypted Wi-Fi, like the existing Google Fi VPN.
Now you can securely deposit your internet traffic directly into their servers. No ad tracking necessary.
ITT: people who have no idea what a VPN actually works or what it does.
Remember the point of a VPN like this is to hide your data from malicious hackers, not from Google or any entity it answers to. They’re not getting any more data from you than they usually do.
Those in the Google ecosystem who are still on the edge about using this need to really read into whatever “privacy” they think they were entitled to in the Google part of the Android ecosystem.
This is a solution Google-ites have been asking for. Something within the Google ecosystem to protect their data in transit.
At the end of the day, all our data is going to the NSA anyway. How much does any VPN really matter when they know how to circumvent all the countermeasures and get your data directly from the company you’re using the VPN to connect to?
Can’t wait for google to shut this project down in 6 months
Who in their right mind would use that?
Hell no, brother. Google already has my phone, not gonna route my entire Internet through their servers.
Let’s face it, the biggest thing that people need protection from online is Google …and other social media platforms
Virtual “Private” Network
Yeah. Right.
Is it first of April already?
Google isn’t the one trying to steal my credit card when I’m in a hotel wifi.
A VPN w/ Google seems like a rather counter-privacy move… I wonder if the Google ELU gives them the rights to everything on your computer as well. Either way, don’t care… this is a big NOPE from the onset.
Haha, so like Facebook’s VPN? At least Facebook VPN pays something to its users.
