Monthly VPN recommendations megathread: the only place for mentioning specific providers

Since we get a lot of asking for VPN provider recommendations, we’re making this megathread a monthly occurrence (you’ll find the newest one at the top subreddit menu). It’s a chance for you to ask for or recommend your favorite provider.

When recommending a provider, you must mention at least a couple points for why you prefer it. Don’t just list VPN features that are common knowledge - explain why you chose it. Comments simply mentioning a provider’s name aren’t allowed. No affiliate links, links to review sites, or VPN provider websites. No shilling either.

You might also want to check out our comparison table. We update it regularly so you could find a provider that ticks all your boxes. There’s also a pinned special VPN deals thread for when you decide.

This megathread will still be looked after by the moderators, keep that in mind.

Nord vs Surfshark, they are both the same price, and I had nord for a year now, but which is better, or should I go for another one?

I don’t understand why Torguard got a 5 on protocols and a 1 on encryption, but they’ve been great for me. None of the servers I tried worked for Disney Plus while I was out of the states, but otherwise I haven’t felt the need to go shopping for another VPN for years. They frequently have deals allowing you to lock in $30/year and their speeds are great. There are servers in lots of different countries. I’ve never had any issues suggesting that they’ve compromised my privacy.

Is NordVPN good or bad? I just paid for it. Should I get my refund? What is so bad about the progam’s owner? I bought mainly for Geolock ING what other things can I do with a VPN?

Any vpn which can pass prime restrictions on android phone

Currently using PIA and looking for a provider with less captcha’s from websites. Willing to pay more as I understand cheaper often means more abused.

I was using the IPT home browser which had a built in VPN but it seems like they’re not supporting it anymore so I’m using Firefox, which is better than Chrome but still worrisome when sailing the high seas. That’s all I do that I want obfuscated but there’s just so many damn VPN’s that I might as well be bobbing for apples blindfolded at this point. My buddy likes Nord but I read a while ago they’ve lost a step privacy wise. Who knows if that’s true. Either way, I really don’t want DMCA notices so I’m hoping for some input, thanks.

Anyone have any legit recommendations for top 3 VPNs that are most likely to be legit no log and as secure as possible?

I just want one that I can pay a couple bucks a month! I had that with PIA at one point and canceled. And now it seems they dont offer that at all…

Is NordVPN actually the best VPN, in terms of price, performance, geo-unblocking, server/country count, and availability. A big plus is also that it isn’t owned by Kape, unlike Express, PIA, and Cyberghost. I was deciding between Express and Nord, but as soon as I found out that it was owned by Kape that was the deal breaker. What are your opinions?

Looking for a VPN company that supplies a windows client with a silent install option so I can automate windows sandbox startups. Anyone know of one? I tried the big “N” company, Tig** and Keeps*** They are clueless and not helpful, I think the T company went out of business. -Bill

I’m looking for a simple VPN only for the purposes of accessing the google play store in the US while I’m in Europe. Any recommendations?

I don’t care about privacy, encryption, hiding my IP or anything like that right now, as long as I can fake being in the US. I’ll need a little bit of data to process payments and do app downloads, but they’re not big apps. Hoping for something free, don’t care if they sell my data.

Thanks!

Is there a vpn that is able to choose a random country instead of the fastest one?

Let me clarify. Most vpns will choose a random ip, but it will often be an ip near your country (or in your country) because it’s the fastest one, and if it’s not near your country they will still regularly pick the same countries because those countries are usually going to be giving fast speeds

What I am looking for is a vpn that will choose a random country (instead of an ip). So far, I found most vpns don’t do this.

I know you are able to do this with any vpns that can be activated through a script or the command line. As long as the vpn let’s you pick the server on the terminal/command line

Did you take a look at the “Encryption” details on the comparison table? Torguard is one of only two VPNs that default to AES-128 encryption. All of the others default to the stronger AES-256 encryption.

I also see that Torguard is based in the USA. If you are using Torguard in the USA, you are exposing your use to US government spying. See this from the old privacytools.io website:

Why is it not recommended to choose a US-based service?
Services based in the United States are not recommended because of the country’s surveillance programs and use of National Security Letters (NSLs) with accompanying gag orders, which forbid the recipient from talking about the request. This combination allows the government to secretly force companies to grant complete access to customer data and transform the service into a tool of mass surveillance.

Also, from the comparison table, I see that Torguard has not undergone an independent audit of its service. Not good…

If you use low price as the predominant determining factor in choosing a VPN, you are putting yourself at risk.

Also, I would steer clear of any VPNs that are owned by Kape, PIA and Express are some of them

One of NordVPN options is a dedicated IP, which may solve your captcha problem

Mullvad airvpn and ivpn, but those are pretty pricey. If you don’t mind an vpn based in the US then get torguard with an discount code which brings it down to 70 for three years, they also have portforwarding

This is what I’m wondering…I have it for now with the 30 days money back. Should I keep it or get a refund. According to the chart it is the best but everyone talks like the owner is crap. So why is it ranked number #1.

I also see that Torguard is based in the USA. If you are using Torguard in the USA, you are exposing your use to US government spying.

TorGuard is forced to give the government your data, but they won’t be able to give the government your data if they don’t have it. Torguard claims they don’t have your data.

This is the case with vpns such as ExpressVPN (Most popular case). Their servers were seized by the Turkish authorities to find out who was responsible for an assasination. ExpressVPN gave them all they had, and the authorities came out empty handed

Also, from the comparison table, I see that Torguard has not undergone an independent audit of its service. Not good…

I don’t think you can trust audits. They are costly. The audits can be faked too. Only 6 of the vpns on the comparison list had been independently audited and proven to not keep logs. (You can trust the authors of the list that they had looked deep enough into the audits to know they can be trusted)

Torguard is one of only two VPNs that default to AES-128 encryption. All of the others default to the stronger AES-256 encryption.

True, that’s bad (I am pointing it out so it doesn’t seem like I am trying to ignore it)

Ah ok, I missed that. Thanks for explaining it. Huh, I had been under the understanding that since they are not legislated to retain logs that using their service was still safe for typical usage. Are there certain countries vpns that are preferred?
