Have my router configured for SS to the same server as my Windows PC which has the SS client on it. With the router VPN disabled I can get as much as 700mbps down (obviously varies by server load, etc).
When I disconnect the client VPN and have the router VPN connected the same PC will be lucky to see 80-90 mbps. PC is fairly new and the router is a Netgear Nighthawk R7800 configured for OpenVPN.
Is there a known issue with slowing the router down or some sort of incompatibility that kills the performance on the router?
606/39 using client on PC, 98/39 using the router only VPN. Stupid Reddit and images LOL
Hi there, /u/DifferentSpecific, thanks for your submission!
You used a flair that corresponds with rule 3 of the subreddit: refer technical issues to support first.
Some support agents are keeping an eye on here, but we still recommend using official channel for efficient troubleshooting - Surfshark customer support first. You’ll find both e-mail and live chat there. It’s 24/7, so enjoy!
If the question persists, make sure to include as much information as possible. Thank you!
That’s normal, what the surfshark support reddit Account simply forgot to tell you sadly is, that “open vpn” is extremely heavy and will Tank your speed heavily on your netgear Router ( weaker Hardware) it even Tanks top speeds on high end Desktop cpu.
So that’s expected speed, does your Router Support wireguard? You will very likely archive 2x-3x speed with wireguard.
So after playing with the Windows client I noticed it was using IKEv2 when I was getting the great speeds. Changed to Wireguard and got similar speeds . Also tried OpenVPN and the Windows client speeds were equal to what I was getting on the router.
BTW router CPU never topped 30% so it was not hardware holding it back. Plenty of free RAM as well.
So the big question then becomes is there a guide for setting up Wireguard or IKEv2 on a DD-WRT router? I emailed customer service, but not sure if this is within their scope or not.
Hi there! Speed issues can be caused by a few minor factors, however, we’re sure the connection speed and overall quality can be improved when adjusting certain settings, so perhaps you can reach out to our customer support team via [email protected] or join the live chat? They will gladly check your case and assist you personally!
FWIW, with my super old router (buffalo wzr-hp-g300nh2) running OpenWrt, I can sometimes get 3xx mb/s with OpenVPN Surfshark. Mostly though in the 2xx mbps range. That’s with software accelerated routing option in OpenWrt turned on.
