Looking for cheap wireless routers with openvpn protocol

Basically it is as the title suggests. I don’t need to find a router worth $20, I just keep seeing routers that cost over %150 for openvpn protocol capabilities.

I am assuming there are much cheaper wireless routers with openvpn, but I need help finding. Please post some suggestions.

Thank you.

There’s always the TP-Link Archer A7, flashed with OpenWrt. More setup, but you end up with something more secure and powerful in the end, with all the VPN options you could ask for.

DD-WRT on a home gamer router check this:

If the device has OpenWrt support and at least 4MB flash you can build a custom image with OpenWrt preinstalled.

Most routers like TP-Link WR841N cost around 15$. If you take one with 8MB you can also use the normal image provided by OpenWrt Project because there’s sufficient space to install the binaries on top.

be advised that openvpn is single thread and most silicon is not optimized for it, so cheaper will mean poor encrypt/decrypt performance.

pfsense is free. Just buy/borrow/steal whatever spec HW you need to run it.

you can get a t-mobile asus router for 40-50 bucks than can be reflashed with stock firmware. i did that and have been really happy with it. if you flash merlins firmware it has lots of options for VPNS, including selectively rerouting specific devices through a VPN.

If you want pathetic vpn performance they have those (under 40 mbit) or use 160ish and get 300mbit via router per device or entire network with a asus rt-ac86u that has vpn acceleration built in.

Search Amazon: “Mango Router” $20 - Built-in OpenVPN client works great.

the prices on this page is why I am turning to reddit, but thank you for trying to help.

Never heard anything bad about them either.

It looks like their source code is available. Not sure what complaints one could have about them.

just bring your phone to any thrift store and see if any of their wireless routers are compatible at DD-WRT » Router Database
