I hope you are all doing well. I’m looking for some advice for the following issue.
I’m moving in a few weeks and there is no “private” internet connection available so I’m looking for a VPS to install a VPN sever to connect my Mac and Windows 11 laptop.
Any recommendations for a hosting company? And what VPN server to install? I’ve used PriTunl in the past.
I use both Oracle Cloud for a free VPS and a Racknerd VPS that I got via a link from lowendbox.com that I spend about $17/year, and they both work great. I use Wireguard and OpenVPN. Both VPS are running Ubuntu 20.04 server. Look at https://github.com/angristan for scripts to make configuration easy.
I’ve had great success using a VPS from Vultr running wireguard for my VPN. I get around 800 Mbps through my VPN. I’ve tried several hosting companies and VPN software and this combo has been the best by far.
Out of the two which one do you think is better? Racknerd is pretty cheap the cheapest that I have seen so far and so far its been running good for me but I still can’t believe the price 0.8$ per month.
Hi, I need to be at certain country location with static IP address to access specific website and pretty sure regular vpn doesn’t work for me.
I don’t want to hide browsing data or anything but need obfuscate the location while connected. Is using VPS correct way to do it? Probably I should not use a very popular server IP address either!
On their free tier x86_64 systems I have gotten up to 45Mb down with Wireguard. Theses VPSes seem to be hard capped at 50Mb.
On an their free tier ARM64 VPS with 2 CPUs, I saw up to 200Mb with Wireguard. I cannot say where the limits were as other people have reported better speeds and I have read they can do up to 1 Gb per core.
Most of the time I’m going between a travel router and the VPS, using it as a VPN, so 45Mb is plenty.
My real work is done on my Oracle VPSs. My Racknerd server is only there as a backup in case Oracle decides to lock my account for any reason. I have an automated process to push key files I would need from my Oracle VPSs to my Racknerd VPS to protect me if Oracle decides it no longer wants me to use their cloud.
Quick question, how many free VPS can you have on Oracle at a time? And if you create one and it’s on but you don’t use it then does it keep working or do you have to use it to keep it in your account?
On the free tier you can have up to 4 VPS depending on how your configure your resources. I use my account regularly, so I don’t know if you don’t log in from time to time what Oracle does, but I have not seen any reports of accounts being shutdown for lack of use. I have been using the free tier for over 2 years with only 2 issues that Oracle quickly fixed.
