Just realized that Apple has something closely similar to Tor

https://support.apple.com/en-in/102602

They call it “iCloud Private Relay”.
However on contrary to Tor, it has 2 relays.
One is run by Apple, other by a 3rd party.

lack of a 3rd relay defeats the purpose of the whole thing

Truist rule of thumb goes: If it’s made by a big corpo making money off profiling, then it’s not safe.

You shouldn’t trust it for anonymity purposes.

It just hides your IP address, nothing more.

I think of it more like a Safari-only VPN. And only works in your country & timezone.

Private relay is two-hop. Tor is 3.

You need 3 hops for optimum anonymity.

Yea I’m going to trust my data passing through Apple lol

Interestingly if you deny automatic access to the keychain you will get prompted for access to it for this purpose regularly, and this is poorly documented.
Here are some related log and details and the official page from apple

There’s also The Onion, it’s pretty similar to tor since they both use an allium as their logo… /s

It’s similar to Tor in the way that a VPN is similar, that is, it doesn’t compare.

Open source vs closes source. Companies ehhhhh

at least it’s better than none

oh sweet summer child, your glaring innocence is bewitching me

They are literally scanning people’s phones and pictures. They’re not a trustworthy company.

One node is run by them, the other node is run by the CIA.

I don’t think so, but that’s not the point. Tor was built to try to give users as much anonimity as possible and defend them from bad actors, the iCloud Private Relay is built just to hide your IP address trying to reduce ads tracking.

By now could be prevented with a simple setting switch as all iCloud content is then end-to-end encrypted and Apple can’t read it
