Hello!
I’m a trucker who recently switched over to Verizon as I have relatives who say the connection for both call and data is just better and more reliable when signal is ify. I have to say that they are correct with that as when I have signal, my data speeds and latency are phenomenal compared to AT&T I was with before. I use a VPN due to how much I do on the internet when I stopped each night. Small issue comes in that I have jumped between a few different VPN’s with the hotspot that all give me a consistent issue after a bit as if I’m getting targeted due to VPN usage? I know for a fact I can get at least 100 down with no issues, as it’ll spike to 100 down on steam or any speed test I use when there is no VPN on. After turning on said VPN (I have used Nord, SurfShark, and currently am using Mozilla), my speeds resemble a sine wave with maxes only hitting like…3 down? with drops all the way down to kilobits at times. I’m just wondering if this is a Verizon thing or if there is a better VPN I can use? Thanks in advance!
are you using Android or iPhone?
also, I’d recommend using Windscribe for VPN. I like their security and privacy, and the fact that they are independent and I like their ethics: https://windscribe.com/ethics
Which Verizon plan do you have? Unlimited Plus or Ultimate? Addition hotspot add on?
Verizon hotspot is throttled, VPN or not, after you exceed your hotspot high speed limit. Throttle speed (3Mbit/s or 600 kbps) depends on whether you’re on 5GUW or LTE/5G NW.
Some claim that TTL lifetime on tethered devices can be manipulated to bypass this limitation. This is, of course, contrary to the terms of service. YMMV.
On phone data is unlimited and not throttled, save for video streaming (which is always throttled, unless VPN).
Additionally, many contend that all hotspot data and jetpack data is lower priority (QCI9) versus on phone priority data (QCI8). So tower congestion may also be a factor in some locations on the LTE/5G NW bands.
Generally speaking VPN’s tend to make cellular connections worse — higher ping, slower, more hops, greater chance of lost frames. So it’s better to not use a VPN unless you really need it.
To get around some of the VPN limiting I’ve seen, I’ve had to sometimes connect with TCP which causes TCP meltdown and this almost sounds like that. It may be worth looking into verifying your VPN is up via UDP.
I was trying to VPN into my work. In the end, TCP over TCP was okay if I was only doing telnet or SSH but any kind of higher speed transfer just resulted in connections working for a few seconds and then hanging up entirely.
Sorry, am using an android phone. Samsung S21 Ultra. Tried both wireless and wired connections
Unlimited Ultimate. I already stated it isn’t throttling yet as I can get 100+ down before the VPN and if it is a new VPN. Any other time and my speeds form a perfect sine wave almost with the height of 3 Mb down and going down to kilobits, usually with the cyclical motion lasting like 5 seconds. I’ve even had my connection stop but my laptop said it was still receiving a signal of which was kind of solved through starting a google maps route, doesn’t seem to fix my issue now though
