Is there any point using Opera any more? Edge now has VPN, bookmark sync with mobile, chrome plugins, sidebar with way more providers. Opera gave us a new “crypto wallet” - still no mobile sync
Mobile sync on iOS is now on the road map
good question…
i might consider switching from opera on all my devices to edge IF all the features i want in opera are found in edge as well
I came to this conversation because, after 20 years using Opera, and having forgiven small and not so small mistakes, I have come to the same point as the op. In the last few weeks I have caught myself using 2 browsers at the same time (Opera and Edge) and when I stop to compare, there is a lot in Edge of what Opera offers, but not the other way around.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was that wonderful splash. I don’t know who came up with it, but it was so irritating that until I found a way to remove it, I started the day pissed off.
On the other side you have Edge with meticulous copy-paste work, but it works, no crazy stuff and now with Copilot and GPT 4.
I personally have written to Opera support, several times, to suggest or complain, about features that could do better or are a disaster, and I think that’s what one friend does if you really want the other to improve.
When Golden Brick bought Opera it was a hard blow. Some people here are worried that their browser is owned by Google or MS, not knowing that Opera is owned by a Chinese consortium. Some will say “But that’s nothing to worry about! They just pay the salaries!” duh?
I think this is the end of the road for me with Opera. I just need someone to figure out how to turn my pinboards into collections. I wish them all the best and hope that crypto wallet become a blast.
You use something because you want/like to use it, because it fits your needs, because you trust in that product/service.
It’s frequently crashing on MacOS as well.
Uh, yeah.
It’s not owned by Microsoft, Google, or Apple.
Anime girl as mascot. Nuff said
For me, Opera is still indispensable because of its “VPN”. While both Opera and Edge have it, they’re not the same in terms of geographic location - which is useful for circumventing regional protected sites.
I am not an Opera user and haven’t been following this closely. But Opera was offering compression in addition to their VPN service. This mean that you could actually use less bandwidth over time, which is especially nice if you’re:
- On a metered connection
- Use a cellular-based wireless service for your internet
- Often operate your device on a battery
Note that there are plenty of negatives to this such as media folks not wanting their images and video pre-compressed. But it’s one possible advantage over other VPN services.
Idk if chrome has these as plugins, but I find the side bar messaging, history and music player to be useful
Whatsapp integration, Flow, and Pinboard are my most used features on opera.
Opera has still some features Edge hasn’t like the Flow, pinboard, capture tool (with edit), spaces, lucid modes, all app integrations (Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter), the player,…
yes, the fast action button on mobile is godly
In Opera, I got used to mouse gestures, messengers on the left and currency conversion after selecting text. The mouse gesture add-ons are not so good - they work differently than in Opera.
Primary problem with Edge is it’s a Microsoft product, and they have a history that should tell you to stay clear.
I’d like to know who in Opera’s Software development team thought a “crypto wallet” was more important than Mobile sync. Crazy.
I like Opera. But they’ve spent the last year working on a Crypto Wallet. The competitor spend the last year copying all their best features… and did most of them better… opera still wins for VPN tho…
I guess you could say that about Firefox too?
No, its owned by a chinesse company.
