Like if any bad actors were in the stream, they could get my IP right? If not recommended which mirror should is use?
Don’t worry about it. There’s not much someone do with your IP unless for some reason they wanted to specifically try to hack linux users?
I always use a torrent to download and leave it seeding indefinitely.
There is nothing illegal about downloading a Linux ISO with torrent, so nothing to worry about.
Ya. 0 worries. Only Americans are scared to use torrent, dunno why.
Yes, perfectly safe.
I never use my vpn for .iso downloads.
Every single site you access got your IP address. There are bad actors scanning IP address and trying to brute force into services all the time.
People worry about their IP address when torrenting because often its illegal torrents and they don’t want to have the address traced back to them, not because of hackers.
What would a bad actor do with your IP address?
The major issue with torrents is copyrighted material, and since the Mint torrents don’t qualify, that’s not a concern.
The checksums are provided, so you can confirm that there’s been no corruption, which is about the only thing a bad actor could do.
You’d be better off downloading from a mirror site closer to you than downloading using torrents and may be considerably faster.
Avoid using a VPN for normal downloads, since you are needlessly rerouting and encrypting binary data.
When I download 21.3 Mint, the next day I got a DCMA email from my ISP saying I was pirating via P2P which I found funny since it’s FOSS and not illegal to torrent. The email also said that they were going to take legal action against me. The case was dropped when my attorney sent a response back to them. Needless to say, they didn’t bother me anymore about torrenting. Especially since I only do it on distros.
Your ip isnt secret, and as long as you arent torrenting something you shouldnt be then the popo will not be at your door
Keep a good password policy, don’t leave your services opened and enjoy.
While you should be fine, I have personally gotten a notice from my ISP for potentially pirating software. Just check your mail occasionally in case your ISP is stupid like mine.
I see you downloaded Twister today …. Shame
I bet any vpn/anonymizer service provider is more suspicious than raw torrent
yeah true. but just wondering if bad actors could do something with my ip adress
thankss! even so, if i wanted to use a mirror how would i know which one to choose?
What would a bad actor do with your IP address?
I’m amazed at how many people think their IP address is supposed to be private or that they aren’t already being scanned constantly.
okay so should be good then? if i wanted to use a mirror how would i choose the right/best one?
VPN’s are recommended if you are downloading a car.
There isnt much anyone can do to you unless you are being caught distributing or hosting pirated content. Otherwise, torrents are just a really cool peer-to-peer network that due to its nature became associated with piracy but was not made for it.
