Is it possible to access the Verizon Internet Gateway from an external network?

Hello,

I got Verizon 5G Home Internet. The modem that I received which is a white square shape with black holes on the top side. It looks like this:

It provides a default gateway URL either: 192.168.1.1 or mynetworksettings.com

I can access it from any device that’s connected to modem local network either through wifi or ethernet.

If I want to access this page from an external network, is it possible to install/configure a mesh vpn such as Tailscale so if I’m connected to the mesh vpn from the external network side as well, I could access the router page (because I wonder why a UPS device that’s connected through a usb to a pc on the local network is accessible from an external network if a mesh vpn is used on both sides, so can’t a modem be the same?)? Or what other alternative ways exist to make this accessible (other than remote desktop to one of the devices on the local network)?

Thank you.

If you have network wide VPN access to the LAN, then yes, you should be able to access the router page. Sometimes they do restrict access by the LAN IP range, so you may need to add the VPN Network range to some whitelist or setting on the router.

What’s a “network wide VPN access to the LAN”? How do I know if I have it or not? Is this a regular VPN unlike a mesh vpn?

I use OpenVPN. Depending on how it is set up, it could give access to a single host, or the host and any network that is accessible via that network’s default route.

Not sure how the new mesh VPNs work, but I think they work more on the host level.

So to access the router page from the external network using your method, I will need to connect to a vpn such as OpenVPN on the external network in order to be able to access the router page?

I have a OpenVPN server running on a host in my LAN. On my router I have a static route for the VPN Network range, with the destination set to the LAN IP of the VPN server. On the router I have a port forward for 1194UDP to the LAN IP of the VPN server.

When I’m away from the LAN, I use a OpenVPN client to connect to the VPN (WAN IP of home network) on port 1194UDP.
