Is it possible for me to uninstall ExpressVPN?

So my computer restarted yesterday, and ExpressVPN stopped working with an “unknown error.” No problem, I thought, I’ll just uninstall and reinstall it. I then spent two hours trying to uninstall ExpressVPN with no success. Here is what I tried:

  1. Obviously I started with the ExpressVPN uninstaller. This did not work. I simply get a message saying “unable to uninstall.” Same if I try to modify or repair.
  2. I located the files and tried t manually delete them. This does not work because “the folder or the file in it is open in another program,” even after I have scoured the active processes in Task Manager to make sure that nothing with ExpressVPN is open.
  3. Rebooting does not solve either of these problems.
  4. Using the advice from this post, I tried the Microsoft Program Install/Uninstall thing with no luck. This program claims to have fixed something, but even after running it, I have all the same problems and cannot uninstall ExpressVPN.
  5. I have tried Bulk Crap Uninstaller (as recommended in that same post), which gives me this fascinating error box titled “Failed to delete some items,” with the text, “System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file ‘C\Program Files (86)\ExpressVPN\expressvpn-ui’ because it is being used by another process, at System.IO.File.System.RemoveDirectoryInternal(StringfullPath, Boolean topLevel, Boolean allowDirectoryNotEmpty)” and so on for about 20 more lines.
  6. I have also tried Revo Uninstaller freeware with no luck. It cannot locate ExpressVPN, although the files are still right there, un-deletable, on my C drive.

Anyway, I’ve already decided to accept my losses and just buy another VPN that works, but I’d still love to get this junk off my PC.

Any ideas?

If you can launch the app, look for a setting that tells it to connect on launch. Check Services and stop any with ExpressVPN. Go into Task Manager and end any tasks with ExpressVPN. Then try the options you tried already.

I had similar problem last week and it was very frustrating that I could not uninstall (so that I can reinstall). I contacted ExpressVPN and they gave me the following advice and thankfully it worked.

  1. Press “Ctrl + Alt + Delete” Key or “Window + X” Key and click the “Task Manager” option.
  2. Click on the “Processes” Tab.
  3. One at a time, select any active ExpressVPN process and press the “Delete” key on the keyboard or right-click on the process and click on “End task”.
  4. Once all active ExpressVPN processes are ended, try uninstalling the ExpressVPN app again.

Note: During the uninstallation process, a pop-up appeared with three options (though I don’t recall the exact wording). The options were something like ‘Proceed Anyway,’ ‘Repair,’ and ‘Reboot.’ I selected ‘Proceed Anyway,’ and the uninstallation completed successfully.

Also, you could try booting into safe mode and then delete the files.

This didn’t work for me. Did anyone else have success?
