So my computer restarted yesterday, and ExpressVPN stopped working with an “unknown error.” No problem, I thought, I’ll just uninstall and reinstall it. I then spent two hours trying to uninstall ExpressVPN with no success. Here is what I tried:
- Obviously I started with the ExpressVPN uninstaller. This did not work. I simply get a message saying “unable to uninstall.” Same if I try to modify or repair.
- I located the files and tried t manually delete them. This does not work because “the folder or the file in it is open in another program,” even after I have scoured the active processes in Task Manager to make sure that nothing with ExpressVPN is open.
- Rebooting does not solve either of these problems.
- Using the advice from this post, I tried the Microsoft Program Install/Uninstall thing with no luck. This program claims to have fixed something, but even after running it, I have all the same problems and cannot uninstall ExpressVPN.
- I have tried Bulk Crap Uninstaller (as recommended in that same post), which gives me this fascinating error box titled “Failed to delete some items,” with the text, “System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file ‘C\Program Files (86)\ExpressVPN\expressvpn-ui’ because it is being used by another process, at System.IO.File.System.RemoveDirectoryInternal(StringfullPath, Boolean topLevel, Boolean allowDirectoryNotEmpty)” and so on for about 20 more lines.
- I have also tried Revo Uninstaller freeware with no luck. It cannot locate ExpressVPN, although the files are still right there, un-deletable, on my C drive.
Anyway, I’ve already decided to accept my losses and just buy another VPN that works, but I’d still love to get this junk off my PC.
Any ideas?
