I’ve noticed that for the last few days I think that when I try to connect to a US server my ip lists itself as being in Germany or England. I’m trying to keep my location in the states so it’s frustrating when it says im connecting to a US server and it puts me across the Atlantic. If anyone knows a fix, or if im doing something wrong please let me know.
I notice this all the time. Connected to a US server but IP shows England.
I had this a while back for a couple of Proton’s newer African countries. Some geoIP databases had the right location and others had it wrong. It sorted itself out since then though.
Which servers were showing up incorrectly for you?
Last night I connected to a server in NJ. WhatsMyIP showed my IP was in TX, but most sites I visited were in French.
I’ve had this happen to me for the last few months and as annoying as it is, the only fix I know of is to hop around the servers for the location you want and see if that fixes it. I usually connect to the Seattle servers but it seems like a third of them just route to the UK (which is really annoying) when just surfing on the web. Generally the server numbers that have the wrong geolocation are the same so you just come to avoid those ones overtime.
Which specific servers have you experienced this issue with (e.g. US-IL#170)?
Where exactly did you observe the issue?
Are you using any other VPN, proxy, or custom DNS services/settings?
I’ve got this issue – connecting to any country server would end up in Prague, CZ. Updating the ProtonVPN app (macOS) to the latest version helped.
I haven’t seen that for any of the US servers so far. Do you have the server number that was showing up wrong?
Currently all of the following are wrong for me, and probably many more, but dont have time to check it.
- Venezuelan shows US
- Uzbekistan shows US
- Tanzania shows Hong Kong
- Irak shows US
Edit: Not using any other vpn/dns or proxy settings. And choice of server within country doesn’t seem to matter.
Im having same issue - when choosing other countries to connect, mostly connecting to Czech repubulic or London UK, not to choosed target countries. Maybe becouse im from Baltics and those are the closest to me. Not good
Using: ifconfig.co , then whois ip
No idea. It doesn’t happen very often, but it wasn’t a one-off either. It didn’t bother me too much. I could get to where I wanted and I still remember enough of my high school French to get by.
Are you checking this on ip.me? Can you please let us know the specific servers in question?
If you check ip.me do you get the correct geolocation for these servers?
I’m using linux terminal command “whois”, it’s fast and acurate. Here how it works:
Whois is a command-line utility used in Linux systems to retrieve information about domain names, IP addresses, and network devices registered with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The data received by Whois consists of the name and contact information of the domain or IP address owner
You don’t see geolocation on the map, but countrie codes like CZ, city names Prague etc. Looks to me, that proton sometimes connect to server, where fitts better at the moment, thinking, that customers doesn’t check that.
