iOS connection hangs intermittently

Update 3/3/23: RESOLVED! No help from Nord. Latest app update (app version 8.6.1 [323]) has resolved the issue!

Update 2/16/23: TL:DR No resolution found after changing DNS address and protocols, and disabling Threat Protection Lite.

  • Asked to submit screenshots of list of applications: 1. Open the iOS Settings application. 2. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings app to find the application list. 3. Send us screenshots of all the applications installed on your device. Nothing found. While doing this, my device dropped connection 4 times in about 5 minutes.
  • Asked to disable Threat Protection Lite and use a specific DNS address (103.86.96.100). 1. Open the NordVPN application and go to the Profile menu (bottom-right corner); 2. Tap on the Threat Protection Lite shortcut to disable the feature, if it is enabled; 3. Head to the Settings menu (top-right corner) > Protocol; 4. In the DNS section, tap Enter custom DNS address and enter this address: 103.86.96.100; 5. Reconnect to the VPN to confirm the change. Please note that the Custom DNS feature does not work with the IKEv2 protocol, so if you have it selected as your protocol, please change it to any other one as per step 3 of the instructions. DID NOT RESOLVE ISSUE. During and after completing these steps and chatting back and forth, connection dropped another 3 times in about 5 minutes.
  • Asked to change protocols. 1. Open the NordVPN application and go to the Profile menu (bottom-right corner); 2. Head to the Settings menu (top-right corner) > Protocol; 4. Select a different protocol; 5. Reconnect to the VPN to confirm the change. DID NOT RESOLVE ISSUE. Not only are UDP and TCP nearly unusable with speeds less than half that of NordLynx (i.e., instead of the connection hanging for 30 seconds, I now wait 30 seconds for something to load), the issue still persisted, while much less frequently.

Update 2/13/23: Case opened with support. Was told to use only cellular data to see if resolved. Does not resolve issue. Issue still persists on cellular.

Original Post: About a week ago on my iOS device, I began having an issue where my internet connection would hang for about 30 seconds, then would re-establish. This would happen about once every 15 minutes or so. I tried connecting to different servers, changing protocols, etc. and nothing has helped. I even connected to the same servers that work great on my PC - no luck fixing the issue on iOS.

Today, I deleted the VPN profile, deleted the NordVPN app, and reset network settings. After restarting the device, I downloaded the app again, logged in, and left all settings as default. The problem is now WORSE. The connection hangs for about a minute and this is happening once every 10 minutes or so.

When the connection hangs, I open the Speedtest.net app and run a test. I find that the download is working well, however, the upload has high ping/latency and the upload speed will freeze for 5 seconds, jump to a different value, and repeat until the test ends.

There appears to be some issue with the VPN connection losing its connection on the upload side of things. This would be a Nord issue, not a device issue.

Has anyone had this same issue? Any luck fixing this?

Having the same issue on android. Getting really annoyed by it. I’ve been using nord for years and never had issues before the last month or so. If it’s not resolved soon, I’m cancelling my subscription

I swear it’s been weird on iOS for me for a while now too. The VPN switch in Settings flips right back on when I turn it off. I can never tell if the VPN is active or not. Sometimes the Nord app says it’s connected, other times it doesn’t. The “VPN” icon in the top bar comes and goes and who tf knows. Sometimes it connects to sites that usually don’t if VPN is on, and vice versa.

I recently uninstalled it on my phone, planning on reinstalling it soon, to see if that helps. Hopefully you report back with what support says; could possibly help more of us.

I will be chatting with support soon.

Any news from support?

yea, I’m having the same issue lately

Same here. Absolutely no issues on my iPads however. Only on my iPhone 13 Pro.

I’m having this too. I only use the VPN on wifi so I can’t speak to the issue on data.
Please update us with what you find out!

Y’all having problems, is it on WiFi only? or on cellular too? I used wifi 90% of the time and chat wants me to test with no wifi for a day. My house and my work have no signal inside, so I’m not going to be able to test.

I had this exact issue with my iOS devices. Reinstalling the app worked on the iphone (iOS 15.7.3) but not the iPad (iOS 16.2).

What did work on the iPad was changing the VPN protocol from ‘recommended’ to ‘IKEv2.’

Some issues too the last three weeks. Switching to UDP has solved the speed issues on my iPhone & Firestick Max. Nordlynx is unusable during those three weeks. Changing server or country is hit or miss. Ok once connected to a server. Just hope you never need to choose another😡

Support has been weak. It was escalated and now chatting with someone else. More to come.

I’m providing updates in the OP to make it more visible.

I can second that. No iPad issues for me, but iPhone 14 Pro is buggered.

Both for me. I tried on WiFi as well as 5G cellular, both times Nord caused the connection to drop.

Thanks mate, much appreciated! Cheers!
