iCloud Private Relay with a third-party VPN

I’m using a third-party VPN on my Apple devices, with NextDNS as a DNS fallback in the event that my VPN connection terminates, or is off.

I’m under the assumption that in apps like Mail, Safari, and internal webview controls, traffic will be routed to Apple private relay if this option is enabled INSTEAD of through my VPN? If that’s the case, seems like it makes more sense to leave this option off entirely, but just wanted to get some clarification in case anyone knows for sure. Thanks.

Ddi you ever find the answer? Because I thought it would double up and I’ve disabled Private Relay since I use a VPN.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to confirm and didn’t test it, however I read enough comments here and there that it seemed to make sense to just leave it disabled if you’re using your own VPN. That’s exactly what I ended up doing.

Thanks. That’s what I’m doing too.

The only thing I don’t like about using a VPN vs. Apple Private Relay is the VPN is a lot slower.

That greatly depends on your VPN provider. There are some out there with excellent speeds. Given the nature of what a VPN is and how it works, there will always be some sort of hit on the speed, but it can be barely noticeable with good providers.
