I love Surfshark, its speed, Interface, features, and reputation.
But, since Surfshark is based in the Netherlands, which is a member of the 9 Eyes alliance, If ANY GOVERNMENT OR COMPANY asks for user data from Surfshark, will they give it out?
Seriously. Will they provide my real IP, Session, Location, Traffic, and all to THE BIG AND POWERFUL PEOPLE? I always connect using Multihop to get extra Privacy and Avoid captcha!
If you want extreme privacy I would avoid using a VPN like surfshark. Use Tor with tails os and boot it from a USB. There are many tutorials online. If done correctly with other stuff, it can be very safe.
Well, I am aware of other anonymization ways like you mentioned using TOR and Tails but that’s a different thing all together. TOR and VPN both have their Pros and Cons. Being a Surfshark customer, I am questioning their privacy in a good way. I appreciate TOR as well and even used it when needed but I don’t need TOR for everything I do on my devices while I do use Surfshark on my laptop all the time.
Your post/comment has been removed because it violates our subreddit rule “Stick to the topic of Surfshark”.
It seems like you veered off-topic a bit by mentioning our competitors or other services not related to Surfshark. While we totally get the excitement and the temptation to explore, our little corner of the internet is all about keeping the focus on Surfshark and its rad features.
To keep the Surfshark vibes strong and ensure we’re all riding the same wave, here’s a quick tip: when posting or commenting, let’s keep the conversation centered around Surfshark and topics directly related to it.
To elaborate on your question about the Nine Eyes Alliance, the laws of the Netherlands do not establish any obligation to log or retain user data and we have no intention to do this. Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, and Fourteen Eyes agreements stand for countries’ intelligence authorities, but they have no power over the existent laws of the Netherands, and the country has no laws that require logging or retaining user data. If this would ever change, we will consider relocating to different jurisdiction.
Regarding your question about server resets, these resets are not scheduled; instead, they are triggered automatically in extreme scenarios, such as physical tampering or unauthorized access to a physical server by a third party. Shutting down the server wipes out the operating system, i.e., the only “data” / information there. Their purpose is to wipe the server’s operating system, making it unusable for any purposes beyond our oversight.
In short, if somebody just wants to take the server from the datacenter, it becomes nonfunctional when the power goes off.
