I don't remember giving ChatGPT tracking permission... How does it have my "location"?

The reason I know I’ve never told ChatGPT that I’m in Paris is because I’m actually not in Paris. Normally, ChatGPT doesn’t work when I have a VPN on, but for some reason it has been working for me for the last few days. Now it tells me I’m in Paris (when asking where to buy the specific parts I need), the location of my VPN? That’s too specific to be a hallucination, especially becuase I havent ever mentioned Paris in any of my communications. Thoughts?

Well it cannot magically track you, either you did indeed mention Paris somewhere in a previous chat and it got saved into chatgpt’s memory, OpenAI just has normal geotracking (like literally every other website in the world) and gives the details of geotracking to chatgpt or it really is just a hallucination

It seems to be doing it by reading the IP address. Which technically isn’t active tracking, just a function of the internet. My vpn has always worked (nord) I even use it for my own country connection to mask said function. I am in England, just not there. This is basically what VPNs are always selling you when they say cover your privacy because everything you connect to has your rough location. So you could say your vpn works

The same thing happened to me when i asked for the answer to a letter-writing question. It made up a generic response to that question for the first half of the address similar to other answers to that question online, all of them being from a different country than mine, and then for the state and country, it put in mine. I too have never mentioned to it where I’m from. You’re not hallucinating.

I am at my parents for the weekend, and I asked it about some car parts i need to change. I never mentioned the city where I am, and it said here are some services where you can change your brake pads in (city name). And when I confronted it about it it kept rejecting that it can track me or find my current location from my IP.

It did the same thing to me a few months ago. I had only very recently started using it so i knew I never told it anything about myself. It made a comment about finding what i was talking about in phoenix. I grilled it about how it knew where I was and it denied ever saying anything about phoenix. Finally it claimed it was a coincidence. Creepy for sure

Another person with no technical understanding

same with me just now! and now it’s gaslighting me and lying saying I mentioned it before but I didn’t. usually I’m in a different city but I came to another town to visit family. a small town that’s not well known.but it suggested some services in that area when I was looking for mostly online resources. creepy af, definitely raises flags

Well, since everything on the internet does have something called cookies, wouldn’t be surprised if the website do read your information. Nothing is ever private on the internet. Ur location is the last thing you should be worried about because even if ChatGPT knows ur location, it probably will not send it to anyone else or dox u.

Geolocation adverts etc are just one such examples (basically if you’re near a certain shop or place, you’ll suddenly get ads of shops near u)

You need to become more knowledgeable

Ok now you’re scaring me. It can track our location? How do we stop this

A similar thing happened to me, but I have location and memory turned off so it can’t be either of those. I had just arrived in a very rural town in Spain and theres no way chatgpt guessed it as a coincidence like it claimed. I had never mentioned it to chatgpt because I’d never even heard of it before arriving there. Genuinely freaked me out a bit, but chatgpt kept saying he just guessed the town and it was a coincidence.

So a few days ago ChatGPT mentioned the city I’m actually in and I brushed it aside because I’ve probably mentioned it before, but I’ve definitely never mentioned Paris in any context. If it’s just standard geo-tracking, the fact that it lies and calls it a coincidence is what concerns me.

Spot on

If it’s all above board (which I assume it is?), I wish it’d just admit it when confronted. But I guess ChatGPT lying is old news.

Yeah I don’t like it one bit. If I gave permission for location tracking, that would be something else. But the fact that it’s literally saying it was a coincidence is what’s bothering me.
