I accidentally stayed connected to school VPN while watching porn. Will I get in trouble?
Probably not. I work in the IT department of a school, we don’t monitor traffic (if we did, it’d be 90% porn/copyright infringement). But disconnect in the future. Better safe than sorry.
I used to manage an IT department that was in charge of, amongst a lot of other things, monitoring for internet activity that was against company policy. I can’t speak for your school, but we mostly didn’t care as long as it wasn’t a regular or bandwidth-intensive thing. Or - and I tried to combat this as much as I could - you had pissed off one of the IT guys. If they had a reason to be mad at you, they’d keep an eye out for bad behavior.
Really, though, I have yet to meet an IT shop that that isn’t populated mostly by socially awkward guys who look at lots of porn in their off-time. Those kind of people tend to understand that other people surf porn, too, and as long as you’re not eating up too many network resources or looking at shit that’s too fucked up, they will look the other way.
Do tell me when you find out. I need that answer.
I work in the IT department of a university, specifically in the network operations and engineering division. I deal with VPNs daily. Watch as much porn as you want. We don’t monitor the logs. Unless you were downloading illegal content and someone actually sent us a letter about it AND the legal department said to give them the info, we really don’t give a fuck.
It wasn’t you. Some porn addict stole your wifi.
Generally VPNs are set to route only certain subnets. Most likely your personal traffic did not even go through the VPN.
My friend had to visit the “Father” for moral ethics when he did that, of course he goes to a Christian school.
You can always claim that your computer was infected and you had no idea what happened.
At one company I worked at as the IT manager, HR came to me and handed me a manila envelope and said “I need to know who printed these out, now!”
After doing some checking of logs and times etc, I found that there was a department head who had printed them out at around 1AM the previous night.
I checked and his badge had no activity so I concluded that he printed them whilst at home and connected to VPN, not realizing that they would go to his default corp printer.
He had for some reason been surfing gay porn sites and was printing out gay porn screen shots, the panic he must have gone through after realizing he had printed to work must have been funny.
He wasn’t able to make it to the office before they were found.
He got written up - but not fired only because he was well liked by execs.
Why should your school care about porn?
They’re on their way right now!!
I highly doubt it, most admins don’t even bother to check their logs - if they’re even enabled. Just be more careful in future.
Probably not unless someone takes the time to track down everything and make a big deal out of it. But that takes time and effort so yeah no one’s gonna take time out of their day to bust some one watching porn on of the computers in the network. Just you know don’t do it again
Happened to me multiple times. Nothing ever came up… well.
Unless you were tunneling through a server that was supposed to be secure (as in, DoD special projects type of secure), I wouldn’t think so.
Then again, if you were watching porn through a VPN, the connection would be slow as balls anyway.
Connected to VPN does not necessarily imply that traffic is going through VPN.
Edit: someone pointed out OP may be connected to university wlan vpn. In this case, yeah sure traffic probably is going through the vpn, but still, there’s likely so much volume that you’re just one of many post-pubescent males (females? me gusta) looking porn.
Unless OP is at a Christian school of some sort. In that case, sorry dude, you’re about to wish you had merely been expelled.
Guy Montag and his crew will be there shortly.
Dude everybody watches porn on the school’s network. Don’t sweat it.
do you go to a private Christian school?
I do hope so, you dirty little f*cker. (only joking)
Guilt is a powerful thing, huh… or is that embarrassment?
