How to install VPN on cheap Chinese tablet?

Hi all,

I’m moving to China on Friday (I’ve been twice before) so looking forward to it but I had kind of a niche question.

I really want to have a cheap tablet just to watch videos on the train and such as well as maybe a cheap backup phone, since my current phone battery sucks— I see there’s very cheap tablets on taobao that fit the bill but I’m wondering how I’d be able to install VPNs on them? Is that possible considering it’s not like an Apple product, but a real Chinese tablet? I normally use Let’s VPN. Might sound dumb, but help would be appreciated as I couldn’t find much in my Reddit search. Other than people suggesting a “VPN WiFi” but I didn’t know exactly what that meant?

I unfortunately won’t have time to buy one & get it shipped where I am before leaving so figuring out how to install a vpn on a Chinese one would be best.

Thanks!

Android is actually much more flexible than ios, you can install any app from an apk file. Just Bluetooth/email/whatever the file over. No need to go through an app store

Download vpn apk and install, or transfer the apk by other means and install.

I have a real Chinese pad (Vivo), although not a very cheap one. On that pad I could install Play store from APK and then the rest. I have no VPN on that pad but I guess I could install one.
I use the pad for learning Chinese, and videos. But videos i d/l and then watch, so no VPN (or internet) retrieved for that.
Interestingly even when I’m not in China the default Vivo browser will protect from not CCP approved sites.

Redmi or Lenovo tablets are great. I just bought one.
