How to disable internet killswitch when I cant remember my password and NordVPN wont connect until I login?

Today I opened my pc and saw it had no connection. NordVPN had not connected and prompted me for my password. I forgot it, it seems, because it wouldn’t accept it. I have internet killswitch enabled so the internet was blocked out. The way NordVPN works is that the killswitct still has the internet killed even after exiting the NordVPN app (which is bad design imo. I understand why killswitch should be active still, if the app crashed, but here I am deliberately exiting the app. Killswitch should not continue to block internet when app is deliberately quit imo).

Anyway since I can’t remember my password NordVPN wont allow me access to disable the killswitch. And since I have no internet, because of the killswitch, I cannot request a password reset.

How do I solve this? (this is not a IQ test, I do NOT have the answer, I solemnly need to know how to get around this). Of course I could wait until I get to work tomorrow and borrow my workplace pc that has internet… but I kinda want to use my pc and internet today.

I don’t know which OS you’re using but an easy/quick workaround could be to use a guest account on your computer, or just make a new user, so that NordVPN is not launched at startup.

Then you can reset your password, get back in to Nord, and download a password manager onto your phone!

unstall nord? reboot? chat? fix? reinstall?

I would first contact support. You could try looking at all your wireless drivers/devices on your computer and you should see some from NordVPN, disable or remove them

I imagine OP has resolved the issue by now but for anyone in the future the cli commands you need to fix this issue are below -

sudo rm /var/lib/nordvpn/data/settings.dat

sudo rm -rf ~/.config/nordvpn

This removes the nordvpn config, a reboot may be needed after completing these commands but it should enable you to login/restore internet access.

I’ve just realised OP is probably on windows, so anyone in the future finding this, this is for LINUX ONLY.

Good advice, thanks alot!

I disable the nordvpn from starting with windows and as such after rebooting Nordvpn did not start and killswitch was not active. Not a very attractive way to do it, but it’s better than nothing I guess. NordVPN should just allow you to disable killswitch without requiring a login, don’t know why they have that option hidden behind a login screen.

“chat? fix?” not sure what you mean by those suggestions?

I already covered this in my question, did you see this?: “I understand why killswitch should be active still, if the app crashed, but here I am deliberately exiting the app.”

Hey, newaccount1000000, just a quick heads-up:
alot is actually spelled a lot. You can remember it by it is one lot, ‘a lot’.
Have a nice day!

Hey CommonMisspellingBot, just a quick heads up:
Your spelling hints are really shitty because they’re all essentially “remember the fucking spelling of the fucking word”.

You’re useless.

Have a nice day!

If it was maliciously closed how would that disable the killswitch if the killswitch only disabled when I manually and deliberatly closed the app? I don’t see your point making sense.

Hey BooCMB, just a quick heads up:
The spelling hints really aren’t as shitty as you think, the ‘one lot’ actually helped me learn and remember as a non-native english speaker.

They’re not completely useless. Most of them are. Still, don’t bully somebody for trying to help.

Also, remember that these spambots will continue until yours stops. Do the right thing, for the community. Yes I’m holding Reddit for hostage here.

Oh, and while I do agree with you little feedback loop -creating comment, and I do think some of the useless advide should be removed and should just show the correction, I still don’t support flaming somebody over trying to help, shittily or not.

Now we have a chain of at least 4 bots if you don’t include AutoMod removing the last one in every sub! It continues!

Also also also also also

Have a nice day!

haha what is this lol, a spelling bot. hehe this made me smile alot

Am I the only one that can see those bot answers? They are talking to eachother. One is a spelling bot called CommonMisspellingBot. It told me of my missspelling of “alot”. Then another bot called BooCMB called out CommonMisspellingBot for it’s “shitty” spelling suggestions. Then a third bot called BooBCMB told BooCMB that CommonMisspellingBot aren’t that shitty. Finally a fourth bot named ComeOnMisspellingBot repeated the same spelling suggestion as CommonMisspellingBot only it made every second letter capitalized.

I find this quite funny. It put a smile to my face

You don’t just accidentally close NordVPN, you have to specifically choose the exit option and then on top of that you have to confirm that you really do want to exit.

You bring up the issue again, “what if it is maliciously closed?” Well, again I will point out that maliciously closing the app is not the same as me actively closing the app, is it? Maliciously closing the app would not cause the kill switch to be disabled if you designed it to only be disabled if the user manually chose to exit the app.

Besides it would be simple, and good design, to design a toggle option to let the user either let the killswitch disabled or not when closing the app. So we’ve come fullcirle, back to my point about bad design. The killswitch is enforced when the app is closed no matter the cause of the app closing (this is bad design in and of itself) but further, the design gets even worse when there’s a lack of a custom option to let the users choose whether we want the killswitch to be disabled or not when manually closing the program.

I tried to invoke another bot. When you ask wut? Or what? The bot will take the comment (replied to with what) and makes it all caps and a larger font. Like it is shouting. Cracks me up.

Hey BooCMB, just a quick heads up:
I learnt quite a lot from the bot. Though it’s mnemonics are useless,
and ‘one lot’ is it’s most useful one, it’s just here to help. This is like screaming at
someone for trying to rescue kittens, because they annoyed you while doing that. (But really CMB get some quiality mnemonics)

I do agree with your idea of holding reddit for hostage by spambots though, while it might be a bit ineffective.

Have a nice day!

Don’t even think about it.
