I have successfully configured my VPN in the Advanced Network Configuration app, but now I have no obvious way of connecting to said VPN. It does not show up in the network applet dropdown in the top panel and there is no “Connect” button in the advanced configuration app.
You need to do it via cmd as there is no gui for now, I use wireguard and I just have to enter :
wg-quick up wg0 to connect to the VPN. When connected, the network aoplet changes to a key like in gnome!
I have asked the same question here
I don’t think it is possible in current Cosmic.
I have nord app installed - would that have made a difference?
I have a “VPN connections” section under my network applet which contains a connection I setup in Gnome.
You can do it via command line using nmcli. I got mine working a couple days ago. Use chatgpt or similar to give you simple commands on how to setup a new interface with nmcli.
I did have one issue where the connection wasn’t working with my office vpn. I removed and reinstalled network-manager-l2tp and that seemed to do the trick.
issue still persists in alpha 4 at least with Proton VPN. likely going to open an issue in GitHub if it isn’t there already
I have a workaround because I have a 3rd party app. But you are right… run it through cmd line should work fine.
If that’s the case it’s a huge oversight
This is a fresh install of the 24.04 alpha. So no pre-existing connections to carry over from gnome
No it’s call an Alpha release because IT’S NOT COMPLETE AND A WORK IN PROGRESS.
If you don’t understand that then you should not be using it.
Only a suggestion: switch to gnome, add a connection - switch back.
OMG why didn’t I think of that. /s
People like you are the problem with our community. I asked a simple question to hopefully bring attention to it since I didn’t see any other posts or issues on the GitHub that seemed to have been noticed.
God forbid somebody asks a question on a forum, especially about a feature that one would think is kinda basic to have since nearly every other distro/DE has the VPN connections front and center and doesn’t require using the terminal
Does the 24.04 alpha ship with gnome as well? If so, I’ll give it a shot when I’m back at my computer
I don’t see your original posted question as problematic, but your statement “If that’s the case it’s a huge oversight” is, given that it is an alpha release. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
I mean, it’s a pretty basic feature so I would consider it to be a pretty big oversight to not include it in the initial release, alpha or not…
Your hypothetical consideration is out of line with reality then.
An alpha is not an initial release. It is a phase of the development cycle prior to an initial release. The alpha phase is just beginning now.
For a description of alpha, read the wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Alpha
