How is this VPN increase my download speed, My Mbps is 25 so it’s should be just around 3MB/s right? But how is it 6/7 MB/s?? And the speed is actually increase like for real much faster than normal speed
7 MB/s is ~56Mbps. A VPN cannot increase your download speed beyond what your ISP offers and will often reduce it. If you are genuinely getting 56Mbps then that is what your ISP is currently providing to you and not caused by the VPN.
From what I understand the VPN doesn’t necessarily speed up your connection but traffic your ISP would typically throttle is now allowed to be wide open since it doesn’t know whether you’re downloading a movie or cad file. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am : )
Some VPNs are configured to compress data before sending (not advised as may be theoretical attack vector) however that only truly applies if the data is not already compressed.
It could also be due to ISP overprovisioning, on cable internet they can usually deliver faster internet than the package they can sell and usually allow an extra 10% to avoid people complaining about speed loss that could be explained by network overheads.
There’s also a possibility that the GUI showing download progress missed a beat due to freezing (with download still progressing in the background) or other reasons and when ‘catching up’ reports a higher download speed for a few seconds.
It’s a fairly common misconception that line rate and download rate are directly proportional.
Although you can obviously convert line rate in mbps to MB/s the result isn’t the same speed that you will receive the file.
Data transmission over IP, TCP and UDP have a significant overhead at various layers: control/parity bits, frame and packet headers etc.
VPN usually adds another set of encapsulating frame headers, and the actual processing needed to encrypt/decrypt the data.
Conversely there is lightweight compression in some protocols providing gain in some streams.
So, not every bit on the line contributes to a byte in your downloaded file.
first a vpn will not not increase speeds beyond the limit your ISP is providing you. As others have suggested, maybe you’re paying for more speed and just aren’t getting it without a vpn. This could be due to throttling, but can also be an indicator your ISP needs to fix something which can sometimes only take a phone call from you to inform them.
Thanks for the comments, guys
I forgot to mention that I was downloading from “uploadhaven” with free plan which download speed is limited for only 1 or 2 MB/s
I just test it without VPN on fast.com and turned out my Mbps is actually increased
Something gone wrong at some point for sure cuz I paid for just 25mbp

Seeing IDM after a very long time…
I have this issue with my cellular service provider, they throttle connection constantly even though I’m on unlimited. VPN works like magic to reduce or eliminate lag entirely. Especially when gaming or sometimes when streaming video.
Tip: if you use encrypted DNS and can verify it’s working, your internet provider cannot steal your search queries also, meaning they can’t steal and sell your data, your data stays yours.
Device manufacturers and the providers try to stop that(ie device updates and app updates), so you have to be vigilant to find what really works 100% and what doesn’t, not just any VPN or DNS app will work. Application without verification is pointless.
Mac spoofing, and Tor onion browser are safe bets as well for keeping your data secure. Mac spoofing can make you stand out though, and ISP usually knows your connecting to a tor circuit/bridge if it’s in their watchlists already.
This is open ended, someone with greater knowledge on anything I’ve said is welcome to improve on or correct what I’ve said here.
MB/S download speed == Mbps internet speed from your provider
(however they do tend to trick common folks by this)
I 100% notice this. Same when you are on your company internet if they throttle youtube/instagram/FB, etc… go on vpn and boom normal speeds.
i suspect you got an upgraded plan from your isp, check your isp internet new prices.
This!!! I get waaay higher 4g speed when my vpn is on rather than off, it don’t feel right but it is haha
