How do i know if im safe to download?

Hey guys just signed up for nordvpn and just a little confused. i’ve downloaded the app and connected it and everything and thats it? I wanted to do some torrenting and was just wondering if thats all I have to do? it says connected and my IP is secure but my location is still the same? I googled whats my ip and it was still able to show me? I was under the assumption that it pinged your location around the world so you couldnt be located. But hiding the IP is enough? Cheers for any help you guys!

Check your ip before turning on the vpn and then check it after turning it on. The ip’s should be different.

What you’ve done is establish an encrypted tunnel from your computer through your ISP to NordVPN’s servers. After your web traffic is forwarded by NordVPN to whichever site you’re visiting, it is difficult for that site to determine where and who you are. So, except for that encrypted connection, you are not “secure”. Your use of browsers, privacy extensions, your accounts with companies such as Google, Facebook et al, your operating system etc will greatly determine how secure/private your web use actually is. Note that secure and private are two different concepts. A VPN is only one layer. Using NordVPN’s servers in other countries may be advisable if you’re in a country with a high degree of censorship and a low interest in protecting human rights.

Check out this tutorial wich explains how to set up Bittorrent for torrenting with NordVpn. There tutorials for other clients too.

  1. Check up
  2. Run dns leak test
  3. Run ipv6 leak test
  4. Run encryption leak test
  5. Hope there is no logs.

Start vpn > go to > ipleaks.com > run the tests > dont use deluge > use qbit

Check out ipleak.net and use their torrent leak detection.

Edit: Also check out if your torrent client has a setting called something like “use interface” and select your VPN interface. This way, it acts like a kill-switch. If your VPN connection drops, the interface also gets removed and thus your torrent client will stop. NordVPN also has a kill-switch built in. But I can’t use that because I am using remote desktop and when the kill-switch sets in, it also drops my remote control lol.

You will have to re-set the interface every time you connect to a new NordVPN Server tho as the interface name will change.

https://www.iplocation.net/ is more accurate than whatismyipaddress.com. Is the IP that’s showing the same as your IP without the VPN?

Aaahhh ok thankyou so much for that insight I think I get it now. Youve been a great help!

Oh perfect Thankyou!

Oh! Ok good checklist! Ima get on that! Cheers!

Oh cool thanks for the reply!

Yep i used that site you listed and the IP is different when the vpn is on verses off. And thats it? Im secured? Should I change the location to something other then my real location? thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it!

Make sure your ipv6 address isn’t leaking.

Also, for torrents I like to set up the VPN in the torrent client itself to make sure you never accidently download without it

Cool! How do i make sure it isnt leaking?

Couldn’t you just set the VPN app to kill your torrent client in the event you disconnect? That’s what I’ve done and wondering if I should change it. Thanks!

Nord tried to implement IPv6 leak protection, but it didn’t work for me. Mine still leaked out, somehow, and I had to just disable it altogether to stop that. They claim to be working on IPv6 enabled servers, and I haven’t looked into their progress on that.

Yeah, you can do that and it should work fine. Personally I just prefer setting the VPN in the torrent client, then there doesn’t need to be any interaction between the VPN and torrent software. No trusting that the kill switch will work properly. I’m no software expert, but I’ve had issues with VPN clients, so I’d rather go with what I see as the ‘safer’ route.

Mate! Thanks heaps I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction!
