Hey everyone
I need to setup the following:
*Using a work laptop that is locked down at a remote location
- Comnect the above to portable device ( e.g a raspberry pi) at the remote location
- Such that Internet gets routed via my home personal internet from my home server/tailscale pi as an interface to the internet
Why?
I need to keep my IP showing as from my home internet even if I’m at a remote location.
Please note - I cannot install anything to the work laptop e.g tailscale wireguard etc
Please can you recommend how to set up routing to go via my home network via a portable router e.g a pi?
Edit:
Diagram of what id like to achieve:
[Work laptop] → raspberry pi router ------> VPN over internet to home—> pi at home to route out from home internet
Goal: maintain same IP from laptop
Why not a travel router? GLinet that kinda thing?
You need to setup a VPN server at your home network, and a portable router that will be setup as VPN client. Look into GL inet portable routers, and if your home router doesn’t support VPN server get a Raspberry Pi to do it. Search PiHole VPN server for installation guide.
Get a GL.inet Mango v2
Configure the Mango as a client on your vpn. Connect Mango Wan port to the internet. Plug work router ethernet into the lan port on the Mango or connect it to the Mango WiFi. Rename Mango WiFi ssid to suit your preference.
Mango $29 / £29 or used for $14

Will that be able to VPN into my tailscale at home?
I have tailscale installed on my home network via a raspberry pi. Its been set up to allow other nodes to use it as an exit node. I’m not clear how to setup a router on a pi to share this with connected devices. Any idea?
Sorry, I’m not sure where you got stuck. You have Pi with tailscale in your network - that’s like half way through the setup. Now you need a second router to which you will connect from your laptop and router will funnel traffic to your Pi via tailscale.
Ah. Thanks for responding back. Bit I’m not aware on is about how to set up the second router. Initially I was looking at setting up a pi to do this (act as a router) but I fear it’s rather complicated. one of the other comments reccomends glinet which I may consider…
You can use second RPi for “Client” router, sure. GL inet router is another way to do it - it may be even cheaper than RPi, and is designed for that purpose, so it’s definitely a better option out of those 2.
