Help: Connecting travel router to home network with VPN

At my residence, I utilize an Orbi router for network connectivity, and my VPN service is currently operational. Additionally, I possess a travel router, specifically the GL-iNet Beryl model, which I intend to bring along during my travels. I’m curious if it’s feasible to establish a connection to my home Orbi router using the travel router.

I do this but my at-home router is a Flint set up as a Wireguard server. I’m not sure if Orbi works like that, but it’s a feasible ask in general.

I have an Orbi system at home and Slate 750 for travel. I use the open VPN and it works well.

Yes why not? Just put it in repeater mode, connect the Beryl to the Orbi WiFi network then connect your device to your Beryl. Simple as that

Cool! Are you using Smartphone config or Windows or Mac config on the Slate?

Thanks for your response

Nope, I want to connect to my Home Network, when I am not at home. When I am traveling, I want to connect to my home network(Orbi) using VPN On my travel router.

Sorry, just saw this. I think the Mac config or the smart phone.

Ah, that was not clear. In that case, since Orbi doesn’t let you install any VPN software you need to buy another GL.iNet router like a Brume 2 and run a Wireguard server on it and connect it to the Orbi. Or use a Raspberry Pi and Tailscale. Or both. I’m not sure if the Orbi has an Ethernet port or not, but if it doesn’t then your speeds are going to suffer a bit since wireless is slower than a wired connection.

Thank you! Smart phone config worked

Thanks for taking time to respond. The NETGEAR Orbi Pro WiFi 6 Tri-band Mesh System (SXK80) has inbuilt VPN service and I am able to connect to the same from my phone or laptop without any issues. So I was hoping I could set it up on the travel router

Ah that’s good it’s built in. Depending on your software you may have the ability to use OpenVPN and/or Wireguard. OpenVPN is slower than Wireguard unfortunately, but it should still work if that’s all you have. Your travel router also supports both OpenVPN and Wireguard to connect as a client. So at this point you just need to setup your server on the Orbi.

You’ll probably also want to setup DDNS if your public IP at home isn’t static. Here’s a video from the same guy on how to do that: https://youtu.be/3D-FoSzqv24?si=D5Vz8jkCcBe8Vpi4

Thanks again for taking your time to respond!

I did all this and when I tried to upload the config to the Travel Router it wouldn’t connect, that’s the challenge I am facing. I was able to test it on my laptop and mobile, so I know the VPN server is up and running on my Orbi router

Well that’s good. Unfortunately I’ve never used OpenVPN but Wireguard config is super easy. Are you running DDNS or no? If you are, you need to make sure your config file includes the DDNS address and not your IP.

I am running on DNS. Changing from UDP to TCP fixed my problem!! My home router doesn’t support wireguard, so that’s not an option! I really appreciate you taking time to help me out.

Glad you got it fixed! But note that UDP is going to be faster than TCP.
