[Hands-On] Betternet Is A Free, Unlimited VPN Service That Doesn’t Need An Email Address, Lets You Download Torrents, And Has Unobtrusive Ads
This sounds too good to be true.
I don’t trust it.
There’s a reason that you have to pay for VPN services, and a good reason why the free ones won’t let you download torrents. I’d be wary if I were to try this.
Honey Pot.
Pretty careless of AP to not mention a similar product, Hola Unblocker, who was using user bandwidth as an exit node.
Anyone actually used this? What’s the speed and latency like? Some VPNs are much better than others on that. Also do they store any data?
Edit: Historically I have viewed PIA (Private Internet Access) as the gold standard in personal VPN.
Used it for 6 months when I was in Japan. Can’t vouch for privacy/security or whatever, but it worked very well and allowed to browse all the porn content I wanted. No ads, no problems, good speed and no problems.
So where’s the catch?
I’m guessing similar to hola; selling access to your connection.
How does it compare to Psiphon?
Trying now.
Edit: so far so good. It’s a little slow but not crawling slow. No where near that.
I don’t like the mix of free + VPN
I use Golden Frog, have used it for NFL Game Pass and plan to use it for NBA League Pass soon enough.
Free, ads & slow…
The whole point of a VPN is to be private & anonymous, injection of ads means that it’s not.
I will stick with PIA.
F-Secure Freedome is a pretty good VPN service. You get first 14 days free and often there’s free codes available if you search for them. I recently found a coupon code that got me 120 days for free.
I’m no expert in VPN stuff, so I’m gonna hold off from using it and wait for knowledgeable people to check how secure is this free VPN. Being free is just too good to be true.
Extra question, recommended VPN? VPN or VPS?
So much guess work in this thread.
I’ve used betternet for about 6 months, in my phone and pcs. I’ve never given it any information, no name, no details at all. It has minimal permissions on Android and a a check on activity on my PC shows nothing strange. It dosen’t use my net connection for anything other than when I’m actively using it, but I don’t tend to leave it open unless it’s in use.
You can’t select the out point, typically I get UK, US or the Netherlands (I’m in the middle east). I don’t see ads beyond what’s on the pages I visit. It’s fast enough to stream and more reliable than some paid services I’ve used. Best part for me is that it works on every connection I’ve tried which is impressive given vpns are illegal / restricted here.
I can’t guarantee it’s not doing something shady, but if it is I’ve not seen it. They have a sponsored app program that seems to pay them when you install apps - I’ve never installed any but I look and would if I found something I wanted.
I really get being sceptical of free services, especially vpns, and wouldn’t recommend use no anything blind, but I can’t see a problem with this one. Especially as signing up to paid vpns is difficult here as almost all VPN sites are blocked - you need to have a VPN to get a VPN where I live.
So, since everyone is complaining about free VPN’s, what would people say about ‘Zenmate’? It has both an extension and a premium ( paid ) desktop app. Anyone got an experience with them?
When something like this is free, the product is you.
it’s interesting how many people trust their data with some random free vpn provider. it’s the digital equivalent of a van with “free candy” written on the side.
I use this on my iPad more than on Android though I’ve tried it on PC as well. In short, it’s very similar to Ultrasurf with slightly better speeds. If you’re on a crappy network like I am on campus, then you won’t notice much speed dips. Haven’t tried torrenting over it yet but it’s probably crap compared to something like VPNClient (on PC). It’s an alternative but I’d say definitely not a go to outside of just circumventing blocks honestly. Just my 2cents
I’ve been using betternet on my phone for about 6 months now. Works great on public or private Wi-Fi that restricts access to sites like imgur, Twitch, etcetera.
