Hi all! My family is traveling to China later this year, and we want to make sure we won’t need to get a temporary phone plan while we’re there. We currently have unlimited Fi data. Has anyone here gone to china with FI recently?

Just got back from Beijing and it worked fine there. On the way over I switched from Automated 5G to LTE though, as 5G wasn’t working in the airport in Tokyo (not sure if it worked in Beijing or not).
Two suggestions:
Make sure you have your GoogleFi VPN activated
You might want another VPN option assuming you don’t want to use all of that “unlimited” data you have and want to use a device other than your phone. I used Astrill ($30 USD a month) and it worked well.
We currently have unlimited Fi data.
Make sure it’s Unlimited Plus. Simply Unlimited doesn’t work outside North America.
Used it there years ago. It was fantastic. Fast speeds and WiFi calling the US worked well. One thing is, unless things changed, it would look like my WiFi was not connected but all US stuff came up easily with the built in VPN.
Used it over there like two months ago and it was great
Hello OP, I’m going to be in the similar boat as you this fall. Did you end up using Google Fi there on your trip? How did it go?
I’ve used between 2017-now. My dad is using it now and has no problems.
We just used it recently on a trip and had good connectivity almost everywhere. It was noticeably slower than local networks though.
I am replying using Google Fi from China, works good in most places. Some places like xin jiang it doesn’t work, but I think that’s government constraints, not Fi.
As others said make sure your Google VPN is on, get the unlimited plus.
International data will turn off after 3 months outside USA per their contract.
I’m currently in China. It’s working well. My observation has been that my speeds top out at about 50Mbps. Connectivity is stable including on the high-speed (bullet) trains.
Edit: we’re also using a data-only SIM in a secondary phone. The data-only SIM is working well, too.
Hello! I was not part of the trip, the rest of my family went, but I believe they used nordvpn and didn’t have any major issues with communication. When in doubt use a good VPN service and Facebook Messenger
