Fix: Broken XBOX one connection to VPN through PC

I’ve been trying to find a solution to this problem all over the internet but there isn’t a fix listed that doesn’t involve flashing your router with new firmware. I use a modem/router provided by my ISP so I didn’t want to learn how to do that and potentially break it. I’m gonna give you a simple solution to what seems to be a randomly appearing issue. If you use a PC to connect your XBOX one to a VPN, sometimes the TAP adapter will NOT maintain the connecting after restarting your PC even with no changes in settings. Sometimes it would seemingly reconnect at random but anyway, here’s a guide if you’re having trouble like me.

  1. Connect your Xbox One to your PC via ethernet.
  2. Turn on whatever VPN program you are running and Windows will create a TAP adapter.
  3. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections and right click on TAP adapter and go to properties.
  4. Go to “Sharing” tab and check the boxes "Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection. (this will allow the XBOX to use that VPN connection.) Also check the box, “Allow other network users to control or disable the shared connection.”
  5. Normally, this is where guides end but these instructions were insufficient for reasons I can’t explain. If your XBOX one is still telling you “Cannot connect to DHCP server,” then go BACK to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections and right click your PC and repeat step 4 to make your PC share its connection with the XBOX.
  6. Once it’s connected, repeat steps 3 and 4 to revert BACK to the VPN sharing the connection.
  7. You will be connected.

Why do you need to use a vpn though

Oof I see Canada isn’t exactly working out the best on that part check if you can set up custom proxy settings on the Xbox
