If this " online safety bill" passes, can we start discussing what we will need to do with our social accounts to keep them safe, and how to best use a VPN and which VPN will be best. So insane that I even have to bring this up… You’d think we were in a communist country…
EDIT:
LOOKS LIKE THE BILL IS LIKELY TO PASS THE SENATE
Your best options for privacy in this scenario is to use a privacy-focused VPN provider like AirVPN or Mullvad VPN. AirVPN is used by activists and journalists and has an excellent track record when it comes to user privacy. Mullvad VPN does not require any personal data to sign up, not even an email address, which increases the anonymity.
Both VPN’s work on mobile and desktop, however AirVPN requires a bit more configuration to work on mobile. If you are on iOS, AirVPN can be configured once, and then you can set up a toggle shortcut to quickly connect to the VPN without going into the WireGuard app. I just have mine setup like an app on the home screen, I tap once, it connects, tap again, it disconnects. Easy to do before opening Instagram, Twitter, etc.
Realistically, if this bill becomes law, and if social media companies comply, it will be localised to Australian IP addresses. If we use a VPN and turn it to New Zealand or Switzerland, the social site won’t know we are connecting from Australia and thus won’t ask for ID. It’s an incredibly flawed plan that I don’t know why they don’t just scrap this as well.
Your best bet for privacy is sell all your electronics and move off-grid. They already have all your data, they can already connect your online activity with your ID.
Or if you want to keep your electronics, airgap all of them.
Sell all your current electronic devices and buy new devices that haven’t connected to the internet.
In a communist country? Israel is the world leader in surveillance technology and sells it to both the US, EU and allies and China. We don’t need to be orientalist or alarmist about security.
Social media is more cursed than a double edged sword. The years before social media were much better and I’m going to try and encourage my kids to avoid social media as best they can.
Deactivating my Facebook years ago was such a boon to my own well being.
This is far from a communist practice, that’s just fearmongering.
It’s a very good point you bring up. I’m sure they are thinking of ways to circumvent VPN usage. Something similar to China. I wonder how that would work.
Seems the only phones that are not properly traced are cheap Telstra phones, anyone could steal mail, build a profile and register a $90 phone and have legitimate access to the Telstra network… Seems like a massive flaw, anyone from any visiting nation has access to Australia. I don’t care, I gave up on this country years ago but for some vain link to heritage and ego. The moment I can get away from Australian soil the better, I’m not into wealth for toil. I’m into work smarter, not harder. Only beasts of burden do hard work and they’re not known for their intellect.
lmao this whole circus about “digital ID” is a bunch of crap dreamed by the dogshit mainstream media and repeated by tech illiterate bogans. You already have a “digital ID”, it’s called your ISP and browser fingerprint. ASIO can already track every single thing you do online, they are recording your metadata right now, and have been doing so for like 10 years under the powers Abbott gave them. They already know it’s you writing this post. The government, megacorps, and foreign powers don’t need a special new system to find out who you are online. If you’re with Optus or Telstra you’ve got especially shit security.
The time to get upset about the Australian government shitting all over your privacy has long since passed. They are watching and recording you right now, and so are the rest of the Five Eyes. Australian internet users are well and truly under surveillance and have been for a long time.
Go on, downvote this and keep believing you’re anonymous until eeeeeeeevil communist labor creates their new digital id and puts you into vaccination camps if you refuse to use it
