Experience with UP boards

Does anyone have experience with UP boards (https://up-shop.org) running openbsd? I used to have an old alix board that was great but reached EOL, to run my router, firewall an a few other things. No board by PC engines is available right now, so I’m looking at alternatives. Power consumption is a major issue, I need two (at least) Ethernet (not over USB like in the raspberry boards), WiFi would be nice but not indispensable. The power issue eliminates an old computer, 2 or more Ethernet make an old laptop a no go. UP boards are x86, they should be OK, but I got no info on Ethernet. Other options would be great too.

I was seriously looking into these as well before I ended up getting an incredible deal on an HP T730, I’ve read that they are compatible and work well enough but IIRC can’t manage gigabit speeds.

Thanks to all who replied. I stopped at RPI b3+ that I use as a WiFi router and VPN client. I didn’t even check on the pi4, but I guess since it has a proper NIC it’s good enough for a router on stick until I find better, or PC engines start shipping again. My load is not that high that it would be a major problem, just an annoyance.

It doesn’t help you here because they only have one port (unless traffic is low enough to use a vlan-capable switch and do “router on a stick”) but ethernet on the raspberry pi 4 is no longer USB and is actually fast.

Two things - the UP boards don’t have dual NIC, is that a hard requirement?

[edit: I have old eyes and can’t read. . . disregard]

Also, do you have price constraints?

[…] but I got no info on Ethernet.

The information is there in the datasheet, i.e.:

2 x GbLAN (Intel i210 AT) support TSN

or

1 x 1GbLAN (i219)*, 1x 2.5Gb LAN (i225), *vPRO is only available in i7/i5 CPU

etc.

The i210, i211, and i219 are supported by em(4). I don’t think i225 is supported, though - at least there’s no mention of it in any of the manual pages.

There’s also RealTek 8111G, which could be supported by re(4).

Another option is Lenovo m720q tiny and a pcie riser.

Obviously I was looking at the cheaper one, not the pro. And it’s not because there’s a driver that it’s reliable, see iwn for instance. That’s why I was asking if anybody had experience with the board. Thanks anyway.

i225 is definitely not supported yet.

Obviously I was looking at the cheaper one, not the pro.

There’s nothing in your post which says not Pro or not Xtreme, so no - not obvious. Also, Squared and Squared Pro price range is exactly the same so again, not obvious. Moreover, you wanted (at least) 2 x Ethernet ports supported by OpenBSD out of the box so that’ll be NICs supported by the em(4) driver, which are on the Pro and Xtreme series boards. Please be specific next time.

Yes. It’s reliable if there’s no driver! You can rely on it not working.

Update: not yet enabled, but a driver for this was just imported, so hopefully soon.

Hehe, I was about to reply that it is now supported by the igc(4) dirver
