Download speed really slower with proton than without on qbittorrent

Hello there,

I’m flabbergasted, I tried everything i could try, when using the vpn my download speed with torrent is 1Mo/s, when i deactivate proton vpn, i jump to 30Mo/s.

I tried using an older version of qbittorrent, i tried binding the vpn, port forwarding, using a profile with OpenVpn (tcp) and P2P, select only tcp on qbittorrent

I’m out of ideas, is there anything I missed and that could help me ?

Thank you very much

Use wireguard and port forward. Also try another server (and ensure it is one which supports p2p). Be sure to reannounce after you enable the vpn

make sure you’re using wireguard

Have you tried setting NAT Type to moderate? That should definitely help

try a different (but still decent) torrent client like transmission or deluge to confirm it’s not qbittorrent?

I found that Proton Mail was extremely slow when it came to a VPN. TorGuard VPN is the fastest I’ve used and the loneliness the fastest it goes across my entire network so all my devices are connected to at night. I don’t see any speed drops with Proton Mail. I did. That’s why I gave up on it.

This might be a stupid question but are you using the free version of the VPN? I don’t think the free version supports torrenting.

Another stupid question … when you say 1Mo/s and 30Mo/s, what unit is Mo/s?

Are you picking a server that’s close to you? Geographically far servers will be incredibly slower.

I use OpenVPN client on a Linux box and Transmission, I ensure that I use P2P enabled VPN servers and then I often reach 80MB/s easily, I actually can’t the difference in speed when VPN on and off

I was getting between 10 to 12 MB per second compared to 50 MB per second on a 50 MB per second internet. On my phone it was 20 Mb per second on 100 Mb plan and tall God was 100 Mb per second.

You can try this but during config choose No Filter, moderate nat on top of that

  1. The app Installation - WireGuard
  2. Login into your proton account. Go to downloads tab. Scroll down to Wireguard
  3. Enter name for config. Choose your platform
  4. In options leave vpn-accelerator on(everything else choose by your need)
  5. Choose country and use five last vpn`s in a list(most new ones)
  6. Press create
  7. Download that file
  8. In wireguard app press add tunnel and choose that file
  9. Press activate

And then in qbittorrent go in settings-> advanced tab → Network

In network interface choose the same name as in your wireguard app

I don’t know if this could help, but I when I switched from WireGuard (UDP) to WireGuard (TCP), my torrent download speed went from 10-11MB/s to 38MB/s, pretty much the max of my internet connection.

Didn’t try reannounce but tried everything above and didn’t help.

Will do the last thing

Didn’t work

Not sure what it is or where. Will check thanks!

Was always on…

Yep I will try deluge but you can’t bind the VPN (or I missed the option)

Good idea I forgot to try this

What was the difference in speed?

That’s French for MB. O stands for Octet= Byte

Thank you so much, i had so much trouble… my connection went from 100 mo/s to 15 when using protonvpn’s app, but now it’s working really great with openvpn gui (guide from protonvpn https://protonvpn.com/support/openvpn-windows-setup/ )

It may take some time for peers to rediscover you after switching IPs. Otherwise it’s odd your speeds are so different since I have essentially no difference and you shouldn’t theoretically notice much of one unless you have internet over 1 gigabit/sec

Unfortunately not as easily as qbitorrent.

Deluge is definitely targeting more advanced users, I like it but transmission or qbittorrent is better for most people. But try something large and free to download like a linux ISO, I think Internet Archive has some public domain torrents
