Hi all,
I am curious to know about it. And about your reasons on yes or no.
I DO have a permanent vpn connection (Vpn flashed on a Linksys WRT3200ACM). It actually saved my ass yesterday. I was waiting for a DHL package and I receive a fake sms notice on that and I blindly clicked the link (stupid me). My iPhone is fine, rebooted and scanned with iverify. My DuckDuckGo iOS browser had no cookies to leak (it auto wipe all on closure). Virustotal says the site is non malicious, just inert. I suspect someone knew my cell phone # and was fishing for my IP address…… so I just embarked the vpn router on another city, privacy saved!
I cut off that vpn router only to download games faster from steam for instance, or get movies faster from iTunes or other sites…… my line is 500mbits but the vpn router caps it at 140 at best.
And you? Why would you use a permanent vpn router or not? Thx

Unlikely, what could they do with IP address ? If they SMS-phished you, it would be with a password-reset confirmation link to one of your accounts or something.
A VPN doesn’t really give privacy or stop phishing. It would hide your IP address, yes.

I don’t have a permanent VPN client on my router because I need clients on some of my devices (laptop, phone) which often get taken outside my home LAN.
I do. The VPN is active 24/7 on the guest wifi network.
But I only activate the VPN on the main trusted network when I want to use the VPN on a device that doesn’t have a VPN app available. (Roku in my case)
I do because I live in a country with heavy internet censorship. So the VPN in the router gives ‘normal’ internet at home to all devices. Then VPN app on my phone when out and about.
I just set one up on a GL-inet Opal. I’m overseas and I want to be able to use a friends Youtube TV, and this ended up being the best way I could come up with.
I set up a Wireguardian VPN server on a hosting site in the US. Then connecting Wireguard (built in to the Opal) was simple. Connect the Chromecast to that router and it all worked on the first try.
Probably simple for most folks here, but I sprained my arm patting myself on the back when I was done.
Google owns businesses that own businesses that own vpns and Google is everywhere. A VPN is really only good to mock your location. Having one one full time is just totally unnecessary and you probably have a lot slower data rate. Well, unless you’re doing some illegal stuff, a VPN might make you feel safer, but you’re really not. To each their own, but I would use an open source VPN if it was me.
Btw there are router vpn software that allow you to select which device is behind the VpN wall and which one is not. You could even have more than one vpn location active at once based on the device. My pc could be in Toronto, my iPhone in New York and all my IOTs could be in Miami……
Hi, I am looking to set this up. I am reading VPN posts on Reddit. And I came across yours a few months ago. Are you using a Raspberry pi at home and one at the remote location? And you have had no bother with it at all? I tried to DM you, but no option for it
Well don’t you even know about my AdGuard PRO IOS 300k DNS filter rule. The vpn is just there to catch anything AdGuard is missing. I have diabetes and the day (3 years ago) that Google started to show me diabetes management ads I decided to seriously push back because fuck this shit!! The ads company show me ads based on my health. This is a one bridge way too far. We need to fight back.
The router vpn router kill switch. So basically software crash mistake or blue screen software mistakes on pc are impossible. The router kills all traffic is something is wrong. Like I said above? I understood what is at stake when Google started showing me diabetes ads (probably for it from my web searches that I had diabetes). This is going too far and I decided to push back by any means necessary or even extreme.
