Hi, new to sonar and jacket. I currently run everything on windows 10. My download client runs through a proxy server within its settings. Sonarr and jackets are not protected through proxy or VPN, is this a risk or as long as the download client is good, then it is safe?
Make sure it’s connecting to your indexer through TLS and it doesn’t matter. Just because your connection is direct and intervening systems can detect traffic does not matter; they can’t decrypt TLS so what you’re doing whether subscribing to comp.lang.fortran or downloading movies can’t be determined.
Oh, and who needs the inevitable reduction of throughput that a VPN causes…

If you don’t want your internet activities to be seen by your ISP or anyone else, then get a VPN.

Always use vpn for everything. Ideally install on router and mobile devices.
Everything works via vpn. Plex too (ignore the statement above).
ISPs do watch and censor. Not only in USA, but almost everywhere.
VPN speed is 100% of ISP speed typically.
What is TLS and how do I make sure it is enabled?
That doesn’t answer the question at all and can cause issues.
*arr and jackett don’t download anything so running them through a VPN is not necessary and can cause issues.
Read the info u/Bakerboy448 linked.
I just hate how it doesn’t take into account local things when routing through VPN
always use vpn for everything
if you have a vpn on and try to log in to your bank account (or paypal), you’ll probably get locked out of it.
TLS is the modern version of https. Check the settings to make sure your connection url says https and that your windows/mac is up to date. All the …arrr programs use the system libraries for their connections.

Jacket, Sonarr, and Radarr work fine through a VPN. They even make Docker containers with VPN options. If you do anything that is questionable, run it through a VPN. Remember, your ISP is always watching your traffic.
Plex does not work through a VPN. A good option is to either run Plex on a different box or install Docker containers for your *Arr items and set them up to use VPN for just those items if you want.
It can. Just set up a DNS or DDNS address which will be localized by your router. I have lot of subdomains i can access from internet and locally from all apps.
no and no. using both on different vpns.
and i would switch the bank if that happened.
Remember, your ISP is always watching your traffic.
Mine isn’t. Most aren’t. Why would they?
sonarr and radarr don’t do searches or download, they pass info to other programs. Jackett does searches but that is not questionable in most countries.
Again, read the FAQ. Irrational paranoia is not a good reason the put programs behind a VPN.

Oh so very wrong.

They even make Docker containers with VPN options.
Who is they
?
The Development teams of all 3 apps do not maintain any official docker containers.
Similarly the *arr teams explicitly advise against putting anything other than your torrent client behind a vpn
I live in the USA. My internet provider watches everything and is one of the big ones. I look at it as better safe than sorry.
