Ill just clarify my network setup before I get into it:
-
I am running ProtonVPN as a client on my router and ALL LAN traffic is forced through it
-
ProtonVPN DNS servers are also forced via the routers settings so even if a client changes their DNS server on their device then they will still be using ProtonVPN’s DNS servers
-
On my router and clients I have disabled IPv6
I am connected to the Auckland VPN server in New Zealand and when I go to IP Leak I can see that I have 2 IPv4 and 3 IPv6 DNS servers. When looking them up, a couple of them say they are located in Melbourne Australia and the rest say Auckland.
I have two questions:
If IPv6 is disabled on my router then why am I connected to an IPv6 DNS server?
Why are two showing that they are located in Australia when I am connected to an NZ VPN server?
Do I have a DNS leak?
Any insight into this would be appreciated. Thankyou!
It depends! Does it show a location that approx matches your real one?
Have you run a DNS leak test? >> https://dnsleak.com/
Have you tried connecting to a different server, preferably nowhere near either location? If any of the addresses stay the same then it’s more likely you have a leak.
This could simply be proton using multiple DNS servers to prevent issues of one goes down, and the closest place for a good backup they already have set up is in Australia.
It pays to turn off your router for a few minutes and release the switch if it has one. Then power up again. Sometimes the nvram needs a discharge.
Also always clear the dns cache on your devices.
I always use dnsleaktest with the extended test too.
I’m not familiar yet with protonvpn’s config but is there a kill switch script installed/installable?
Could you please share some more specific details, so we can help? Which specific server in NZ are you connected to? Could you also share the screenshot of the ipleak.net results which show you are connected to 2 IPv4 and 3 IPv6 servers? Please write to us here: https://protonvpn.com/support-form
With regards to whether or not you have a DNS leak, the easiest way to test this is to go to www.dnsleaktest.com and run a free test. It will tell you your device’s IP address and your rough location. You should run two tests, one before you connect to a VPN server and one after. If both tests turn out the same results, then you have a DNS leak. More details here: https://protonvpn.com/support/dns-leaks-privacy/
No the servers show that they are all in Auckland apart from two which say theyr in Australia
Ok.
are you near the location of the other two servers?
If yea it’s a leak (likely) I’m not a huge expert…
Imagine speaking in rhymes your entire life, being Shakespeare would have sucked
EDIT: Or was that romeo and juliete?
No, they are in Australia and I am in New Zealand - two different countries
