I am on Verizon. When I am connected via ProtonVPN and have WiFi calling enabled, I start getting missed calls and the caller keeps hearing the ringtone but my phone never rings or even registers missed call. When I turn off WiFi calling but still on ProtonVPN there is no issue. So my guess is the VPN is causing issues with WiFi calling part of Verizon.
I tested it with three scenarios:
- ProtonVPN off, WIFI calling on. No Issues
- ProtonVPN on, WiFi calling off. No issues.
- ProtonVPN on, WiFi calling on. Issues. Missed calls and missing SMS texts. I can call out though.
Anyone else having this issue as well?
might be tcp? i dont use proton but heard someone on a podcast mention that they have similar issues trying to stream over vpn. there may be a setting to switch to udp. just a guess tho since i do not use it… good luck
I’m on VZW, and I had the same issue also. Callers couldn’t reach me, and I couldn’t even call out. I figured out that, in my case, it was the ProtonVPN kill switch; I had kill switch on. As soon as I turned kill switch off, everything began working well again.
Telecom person here: I can absolutely confirm that TCP vs UDP will have an impact on voice services. However, I would suspect it has more to do with security on Verizon’s side and the origination IP space.
I tried this but it didn’t work for me. Also, turning off the kill switch defeats the whole purpose of keeping all communications secure in case of a crash or disconnect of ProtonVPN connection. I would rather not have a data connection at all if it’s not secure.
I think this issue has more to do with how VZW routes the WiFi call data packets.
I’ve been wondering whether my facetime audio/video calls run through ProtonVPN. For example, facetime calls are anyway end-to-end encrypted, so it would be better (as far as I’m concerned) if facetime didn’t go through the vpn. I would like to have a split-tunneling feature available on the iOS app to accomplish that.
I found this site which has a pretty cool test to see if your VPN kill switch is working:
Kill Switch Checker Test
It’s about a third of the way down the page.
I tried it on my Windows 11 system a couple of times and ProtonVPN had no leaks. I then tried it on my iPhone where I have the ProtonVPN kill switch set to off (the “Always-on VPN” toggle switch on iOS is set to on by default), and I did the test three times. Each time ProtonVPN passed, no leaks. Seems secure.
Android app has Split Tunneling. But again, I would rather not use WiFi calling at all if it means I need to open a backdoor into the device with split tunneling.
