I can only connect to the internet if my VPN is on.
(I turned off the killswitch and it doesnt help.)
Any idea what is happening?
This was what fixed this issue from me, found it on another sub:
go into network and sharing center, click on “change adapter settings” on the left side, find your main internet connection that should be working, right click it and hit properties, click on “Internet Protocol Verison 4 (TCP/IPv4)”, leave it checked but hit the properties button that becomes visible when you selected it, and hit the radio button “Obtain an IP address automatically” and then also hit the other one “Obtain DNS server address automatically”. Click OK. Your internet should work now. feel free to give me gold for this comment by the way. im almost out and need more.
Like strife said, it’s a DNS issue. Reset your DNS servers in your adapter configuration and it will fix the problem. It’s a common issue.
I’ve had this problem with OkayFreedom VPN. They don’t remember and restore the original DNS properly when you exit. Instead they leave behind Google DNS, and Google DNS is blocked on my router. I’ve tried telling them, and they acknowledge, but they haven’t bothered to fix it. May affect other careless VPN providers as well. alesisdm86’s instructions to fix it are correct.
If you are running a raspberry pi (pi-hole). Then you need to reboot your raspberry using
sudo reboot
in the cmd line (or putty).
That should fix it. Do NOT just unplug the power, that could corrupt your sd card (I know cause this happened to me).
I also recommend that you setup a reboot schedule if you continue to use raspberry pi as your DNS. Link here:

I’ve tried everything all of these solutions nothing works
I know this post is hella old but I just ran into this problem and what helped me was going into network settings and clicking Netowrk reset. My PC restarted in 5 min and when it came back up boom it was fixed.
I tried everything, but what finally worked for me was turning off a proxy server on my computer. I have no idea why I set up the proxy server in the first place, but I’m so glad this now works.
Still updated cause it worked (Windows 11).

I had this issue just fixed it by charging my private dns from automatic to off and now my internet works
I have this issue too, but when I change my DNS to Auto or set it to a public DNS it works for a few minutes, then stops working again.
If you have to kill switch working, then it can be a reason why your internet has connectivity problems. This is used to hide your real IP address so that you can browse anonymously. This comes with a requirement to close VPN software or to disable kill switch if you wish to use the internet with VPN disconnected. So many people don’t notice that their KILL SWITCH button is ON. Turn it off, and it will work. 90% it’s this.
So what if it isn’t just a PC, but ALL devices connected to the router?

Unfortunately it does not work for me. But the problem is on all devices. Yesterday it worked, today all devices stopped working at the same time - except if I tunnel through a VPN.
I guess the problem is with the automatic DNS server!? Except google dns also does not work. But VPN does.
