Let’s setup a scenario, where you have a mortal enemy that knows you specifically and is trying to get your IP Address:
-
Will a VPN stop that person from obtaining your IP Address?
-
Can they pin point your exact real life location from your IP?
-
What can they do with that IP Address?
and i’m not talking about just random hackers on the internet, or websites collecting your data, or just random viruses or whatever. i’m talking about a person that is specifically targeting YOU.
Use a VPN with a kill switch. If the connection drops for some reason, it cuts your internet until you’re able to connect again.
No, they can’t pinpoint your exact location even if you didn’t obfuscate your IP with a VPN.
No they are not able to grab your IP while using a VPN.
If you are ultra paranoid, buy a 16 GB USB 3.+ thumb drive, install tailsOS and use the internet however you like. Tails uses a method called “amnesia” which allows it to store the information on your RAM, when you shutdown or restart the PC, it deletes everything and is not recoverable.
Tails also runs everything through the TOR network, making it far harder, likely impossible for the average person to track anything.
Or just use a VPN with a kill switch. Don’t click links or emails you are not expecting or suspicious of. We don’t live in an era where script kiddies or even great hackers can just access your system whenever or however they want.
Stay safe.
also, thank you so so much for the incredible and detailed comment. i appreciate the effort a lot! i’ve been looking for quite a bit for an answer to those questions and your answer is the best one i’ve got by far.
They didn’t really find the Unabomber. His brother recognized a phrase he used in his manifesto, and turned him in.
Just watched the video you linked and their setup was wild. It’s crazy that they ever got caught.
Don’t use your own fucking network to start with.
i don’t understand this bit, what do you mean not use my own network?
They found the Unabomber before the web was invented. They found bin Laden, and he lived totally off-grid -
yeah the government can find anyone, but i’m talking about a person that isn’t a government but is however a hacker of some sort or a person that hired a hacker. can that person find you? and is it preventable? does that video contain information that would help me in this regard?
The ‘gov’ didn’t find the Unabomber. His brother recognized the language in the manifestos the Unabomber sent and called the FBI. In fact, he wasn’t even a suspect when his brother turned him in. ‘the gov’ didn’t find Bin Laden either. I think a CIA agent was told about a high priority Target. When the agent surveilled the house, he noted there was a VERY tall man residing there. It wasn’t just that one tip tho. So people snitched on those people, ‘the gov’ may not have EVER found them otherwise.
