Can GL-MT3000 be used as a remote VPN gateway if I have two of them?

I have two GL-MT3000 and want to leave one at home and take the other with me while i travel in Europe on business . Is it possible to configure the GL-MT3000 router at home in the US as a VPN gateway so I can connect to it via the other GL-MT3000 ? Id like to have access to the systems on my Local home network remotely

Cheers,

Yes. At home the box is set up as wireguard server. The travelling box is set up as wireguard client for that server. This is a very common use case for these routers. I have travelled all over the world doing this.

There are a bunch of things required to make this work. However, I’m on a phone and can’t type the essay that is required.

in general terms, you need to issue on the server a configuration file, which you install on the client router. Then need to do some port forwarding on the server network on the main router, so that the WireGuard connection can make its way to the WireGuard server on your network. You must also use dynamic DNS or have a fixed IP address or have your own domain name.

You will then be able to access your internal resources. I do this less so that I can access internal resources (i do that securely over SSL) and more for the need to sometimes appear as if I’m coming from My Home country.

Tailscale or zero tier can accomplish the same thing but they have their own requirement for some tinkering. if you use Tailscale, then you install Tailscale on both routers and make sure they are part of the same account. Your Home router will then have a special IP address and if you set up Tailscale correctly you can see your internal devices at home.

Would i have to use something like zerotier to accomplish this ?

Like what Ownschedule2024 said. Yes. Set one up as the Wireguard / OVPN server. Do any necessary port forwarding. Setup the certs. Copy them over to the other device and happy days. Its SUPER simple with the GLiNet Interface other than the port forwarding which can be a pain. Tailscale will simplify this requirement.

You can also try zerotier.

this guy goes through it pretty well.
