Hey all! I’ve been on this sub for a while, but made a new account for this for professional reasons. I’ve noticed that the Chinese LoL scene is something that readers of this subreddit seem to be interested in but unable to get a satisfactory amount of information about.
I’m a league player and professional Chinese to English translator living in Southeast China and I’ve decided to do translations of Chinese LoL material for Reddit as a side project. My question to you all is, what do you want to know? What kind of material do you want? I can do news articles, guides by Chinese pros, translation of published interviews, etc. I can even do some subtitling if you like, though that’s more labor intensive. So what do you all want? Go ahead and throw out some suggestions and I’ll see what I can find and make available for you fine folks!
EDIT: Super happy to see this has gotten a solid response. I just got back from a movie and I’m going to work on replying to everyone now. Thanks for all the interest!
I think the first great thing would be a short presentation of each team in the LPL and their history, relationships + the players. That would be really cool and it doesn’t have to be done all at once. For example you can present one team every week.
That way you can reach a bigger audience since the upvote/downvote system in reddit is really unpredictable. I am sure your professional translation background would be an asset.
the hardest thing for me is finding updates on what LPL teams are doing, i.e. what exactly OMG is planning to do with xiyang, cool returning, allen possibly moving to jungle, etc. Wherever these news/rumors are, I think translations would make good stories here on reddit!
To be honest the best way is to have it stream HD in twitch with GOOD English casters. I remember watching ogn first and second season, with molewhatsisface casting, no one watched (2k viewers mig frost vs mig blaze, anyone remember?). When they brought in doa and Monte and made themselves readily available for the western scene to take a peak is when they started getting popular.
Most of what you mentioned is precisely what people are looking for. A look into the chinese scene, be it through guides, interviews, etc
The one issue I have right now is the lack of english casting of LPL. For this reason, I want to maybe suggest doing a subtitled version of LPL matches if thats how you feel comfortable. The ability to know what chinese casters are saying during the LPL would be invaluable, as with LCS and OGN, the casters tend to have some sort of inside info regarding certain picks and strategies. Without some sort of official LPL english cast, this would be impossible to do. When watching LPL, I tend to just mute and listen to some chill music while watching the stream or a VOD, with subtitles this means I’m not missing a single beat by having to mute.
Edit: Not too sure of the legality of translating LPL VODs though, so at your own risk take this post into account
If I’m not wrong you’re not the first person which has offered that but no one has ever delivered or at least it wasn’t in a good enough quality. I’m sure the interest is here
I would suggest giving a list of the best players in each position, and what the fans think about them. With their strengths and weaknesses, and perhaps any interesting facts such as their nicknames or how they came to be in the professional scene.
It would be pretty cool if you could translate a couple posts on the most active Chinese forum for LoL (like Inven for Korea or Reddit for us). It would be nice to see their opinions on Western teams and on the game itself from a different perspective.
Wanted to do this a long time ago, but gave up since there was really nothing that I thought was that different or interesting. Also another big issue is that the clips I could find were generally outdated especially since here in CN LoL, we’re always one or two patches behind.
