Best VPN client for Tumbleweed?

Hey everyone!

I’ve been trying to figure out which vpn service to choose, but I’ve noticed that there aren’t many vpn clients available in the repos.

I was curious as to which VPN services you all use, so I know I’ll purchase a service that will for sure work. Thanks!

Here’s the thing: just about any VPN provider will, along with their official app, provide a way to download configuration files for OpenVPN and/or Wireguard. Both of these can be imported into NetworkManager and used without issue. So in terms of which ones work on Tumbleweed, any should work.

What I would suggest is doing your research and funding a VPN provider that you trust more than the others, and use them. If you’re going for high privacy, I’ve heard Mullvad is best for that. NordVPN is the one with all the sponsored YouTube videos. PrivateInternetAccess sponsors some stuff, including FreeNode servers. ProtonVPN is from the same people as ProtonMail. Those are the main ones that come to mind.

I use PIA with NetworkManager OpenVPN plugin

ProtonVPN is the one I went with. Simple installation using zypper and pip. Brilliant reliable service and no logs.

NordVPN utilizing the NordLynx (Wireguard) technology. Works well, throughput has never let me down. The client is CLI based.

I use Mullvad over wireguard. I don’t use a client. I use wg-quick to connect/disconnect and the only desktop integration is I get connect/disconnect notifications and a tray indicator where it puts a little lock symbol on the network icon. I abruptly quit PIA and switched to Mullvad as a stop gap, turns out it meets my needs just fine this way, and it’s a super fast, reliable and cheap service. Wireguard is great.

Hi! I tried Wireguard today, do you use it using the wg-quick@ systemd target, and if yes, do you know if it works with bridged network interfaces? I could get it to connect to my Wireguard server (apparently), but it didn’t route any internet traffic through the tunnel.

I finally got TorGuard running via kde’s network manager, so that’s a plus! I chose TorGuard because I can get it for 5 bucks a month with a code, and it seems to be highly rated

I just installed wireguard-tools through zypper. No special configuration after that - just the vpn details. Works great and fast.

As long as you trust it. It’s not one I’ve heard of, but at least you got something working.
