AVG is blocking 1337x.to - "malicious" html script

Do you think that this is a result of the site getting more and more sketchy and being added on some list, or is there an actual threat - some iffy script that runs and can screw up my PC just from me accessing web’s search function/using magnet link?
Would it be safe to add it to exceptions?
My IT days are kinda behind me, i lost touch and i’m not so sure how much can just accessing such site screw up updated windows 10/if at all.
I’m of course blocking all the usual popups, after some ad blocker customization, the sketchy sh1t that tries to redirect you to various malicious sites doesn’t even appear, and i never click on anything but search results and magnet links.
What pisses me off is that 1337x used to be relatively hassle free, and with the aforementioned ad blocker customization, it was ok to use.
But lately it’s becoming extremely iffy.
At first it was just the occasional popups. Then they added script that tries to open various shitty links just when you click and/or type in the search dialog, then they added the sketchy VPN requirement, i got around all of that, but yesterday it started getting blocked by AV right from the get go.
Sometimes the connection doesn’t get killed right on the main page and i can get to the search results, but then the connection gets inevitably killed after clicking on one of the search results.
If it isn’t one thing it’s other with 1337x.
So - do you think it’s safe to be added to exception? Prolly not… :-/
It’s ok if it isn’t, better to be safe than sorry after all, but in that case i will need a replacement site for the various internet oddities that can’t be obtained in any other way then via torrents.
So… any recommendations? During the years, i went from the 'bay, to extratorrent and monova to kickass to kat to 1337x. Oh damn i miss kat.

Yarr! ➜ u/pcbflare, some tips about “popup”:

avg is being paid to do that

use qbittorrent with 1337x and other public site search addon for search and download, you wont face any problem.

Eset Internet Security & Qbtorrent, no issues ever with 1337x. And no issues ever with Eset.

The “script” can’t break the JS sandbox and if it does, Google knows immediately and a CVE is issued like the sky is on fire. Highly unlikely, as the typical severe reports are submitted by security researchers and extremely rare to be a web developer who discovers an unexpected memory leak.

Your AV is parsing urls from the viewport source, and comparing them to a database of known bad urls. No magic here, but it’s either hooked into Chrome or it is monitoring packet traffic and going from there (analyzing http/s requests).

Don’t use AVG (or any other free antivirus), these days antivírus are data collectors.

Microsoft Defender is more than capable to protect most virus.

If don’t believe me, listen to a tech guy

I am using qbittorrent. But i gotta get to the torrent first, and that’s where the AV stops me. So, do i understand your comment correctly that there is a plugin for qbittorrent, that allows me to search right from the client? That would solve my issue, that’s for sure…

Yeah, AVG is prone to false positives, but still, i didn’t have big trust in the site even before this. We’ll see how it goes in the foreseeable future, but right now i love being able to search directly from the client, thanks to mrinal_sahay. That is a cool feature i completely missed out on.

That’s what i thought. But since i discovered the search plugins for qbt, i think i’m gonna use those for a bit.

I’m using the paid version, does that make a difference? Problem with defender is that it’s blocking so much legit stuff my head hurts. At least with AVG, i learned how to spot most false positives. But not every time, hence the post.

I use only qbittorrent for both search and download

just add all the public torrent addons like 1337x, TPB, torrentgalaxy and other. private torrent site addons can be added also, sort out the search as per seeders and you are good to go. No need to open individual sites.

If one site addon is down result from others are still shown.

only one time setting and get the ability to search multiple sites at once within the safe and clean interface of qbittorrent. here is the addon site for qbittorrent.

I already started searching for the plugins, thanks for the tip and thank you for the link!

Oh wow that is cool, i somehow never noticed the View/Search Engine option in QBT. Thanks, dude, this really helps! I freakin’ hate the sites crawling with various malicious bugs…
Kinda miss the feedback, but i think that the advantage of being able to completely avoid the bug-crawling webs is bigger than the disadvantage of not having user feedback.
