I’ll be coming to iran in the following months for education. I have heard that everything needs vpns there, so i was wondering which works well, and should i invest in a good vpn subscription.
I was wondering a few like nord or Shark or torr or maybe free ones, but im not sure how that will go.
Also, please give me more advice if you could, about what i should be prepared for, from home before coming to live in iran.
Yep nordvpn works great. Dont buy the subscription in the app. Go on their desktop website. Because the app only allows 1 year or 2 year plans. Where the website allows monthly. I do not recommend free ones because they simply are too slow or not secure enough.
Hey,
From my experience as an Iranian who was there may 2024, none of these apps like nord vpn or shark work anymore. They did back in my visit in 2022. But the government crackdown has made all of them useless.
My only solution during my trip was finding a private vpn connection. I got it through my friend, I paid about 150 Toman a month (~$3), and he gave a vpn configuration that I put in this app and it worked really well.
That’s my suggestion for u, if you don’t know many people in Iran, I would suggest going to a place like Payetakht shopping center, there you will find people who can help you get a good vpn.
I’m currently in Iran with an Irancell SIM card and ExpressVPN. The VPN itself works well and is fast enough for everything inneed, no issue or complaints. The only problem starts if you forget your password. Then you have no VPN and you cannot set a new password without VPN.
Hey there! So I used a free VPN app, Ostrich VPN while I was there for 5 weeks. It worked well for the first 1.5 weeks then suddenly stopped working. I tried a lot of other free VPNs on the App Store & none of them worked. My aunt told me about buying a “filter shikan” aka VPN at a local phone store so that’s what I did. The people at the store had their own secure servers using an app called V2Box. I think I paid like $4 to use it for one month and it works really well. You just need to make sure you’re connected to internet or WiFi.
So you mean to imply the subscription through website is better? But i will be staying for atleast 3 years, should i still consider monthly subscription?
Nevermind the original question, will you be able to choose your own isp and internet plans? I wanna steer you to the better internet providers since some have more extreme internet restrictions, and prices can be horrible when you match them with the speeds. I myself get truly unlimited internet with fair speeds for 300,000 toman (5 usd) a month
Yes I did. I’m here for 30 days and I wanted to be sure I’ll stay connected. It works almost perfectly (it stops working for a few minutes once in a while, not sure why, but it’s not bothering too much). I don’t have much use for VPN outside of Iran, so I’ll cancel my subscription when I’m back home.
TunnelBear VPN doesn’t work at all and my personal WireGuard doesn’t work either (I think UDP packets and WireGuard protocol are easier to detect and block).
Im not sure what choosing my own isp and internet plan means. But all i know is i will have hostel wifi but i still will have to get myself an iranian sim or smth. Ive read that i mught as well need a new phone(?)
