5G Home Internet 4k streaming problem. Updated from LVSKIHP to Lv65 + CR1000A router, even though speed test shows 300+ Mbps download I am unable to stream anything 4k

Hi, I have been having intermittent connectivity issue with my old LVSKIHP, after a technician came out and determined I needed a replacement gateway I received Lv65 + CR1000A from a near by Verizon company store. Setup everything myself, according to both Google and Speedtest.net I am getting 300+Mbps download and just over 20Mbps upload so this should be more than enough to handle 4k streaming but I can’t seem to stream anything 4k. Streaming services like Netflix simply will not go past 1080p, YouTube if I force set quality at 4k then video will stop to buffer every few seconds and have audio/video mis-sync. Switching back to LVSKIHP I’d get just under 300Mbps download but close to 50Mbps upload, however now I can watch YouTube videos in 4k without any problem. Anyone has any idea what might be happening? Judging from past experience there is no point called Verizon support over something like this so I am going into store again tomorrow to see if the in-store rep can setup another technician appointment and hope a technician actually shows up for the appointment.

The way to know that your video is throttled for sure is Netflix’s speed test fast.com it will show you a different (way lower speed) result from other speed tests. And yes a VPN can help bypass this but some platforms don’t play well with VPNs.

Are you using the “regular” plan or the “plus” plan? They do throttle your video streaming to 1080 on the “regular” plan.

vpn should do the trick. could get decent hardware and do it at a router level if you wanted.

Wow… I just checked current pricing and plan, you are absolutely right, 1080p streaming only for standard service. For home internet services throttling streaming is beyond me… I can download at 300+Mbps but I can’t do 4k streaming which only takes 50Mbps. Funny thing is old gateway like LVSKIHP has no such restriction, I’ve always been able to watch YouTube videos at 4k until I updated the equipment (I still have the old equipment so I double tested it), even upload speed is twice as much on old equipment. Now I wonder if I should return the new equipment…

OP are you in an mmWave area? The “regular” plan is limited to 100Mbps downloads not just 1080p… unless you have mmWave then its limited to 300Mbps.

the new “plus” is limited to 300Mbps with 4K streaming, unless you have mmWave, then its 1Gig speed.

Thanks! VPN helped YouTube 4k video playback, would you happen to have any idea why I can’t stream Netflix at 4k on Edge or Windows Netflix app? Is it because the 1080p streaming limitation? Come to think of it, I don’t even think the 1080p restriction was there when I signed up, when I look at my Verizon profile my old equipment has nothing under plan details while new equipment has 1080p limitation noted (old equipment and new equipment has different phone number so I guess they are technically 2 different contracts).

The LVSKIHP has a different plan the L65. It’s a different provisioning profile than you get with an LV65 that isn’t throttled. LV 65 has two plans standard and plus the standard definitely throttles high definition. I actually did tests with both standard and plus plans on the same LV65 and the plus obviously had better throughput, but the latency was way better.

dunno for sure. netflix says edge or windows app but netflix high res support has always sucked on pc tbh. do you have the hevc codec installed? its like a buck on the windows store.

I figured as much. Now I wonder if I should keep LVSKIHP and return LV65 or vice versa. LVSKIHP does not throttle UHD streaming and twice as much upload speed than LV65 but LV65 has better overall download speed. Maybe just bite the bullet and shell out more money for plus plan…

Okay, installed HEVC and re-tested

Without VPN - neither Edge browser nor Netflix app play 4k

With VPN - Netflix app plays 4k but Edge browser does not

YouTube - play 4k videos with VPN, HEVC does not matter

I have the LVSKIHP and get over 800/180 Mbps on the regular plan. I was thinking about looking into the modem but maybe I’ll still with this one…
